Neuf-Brisach 1698 bis 1870 Vom Vaubanschen Meisterwerk zur unbekannten Festung Unter der großen Anzahl der von Vauban befestigten Anlagen bilden die neuen, von ihm ex nihilo entworfenen und unter seiner Leitung gebauten Befestigungen, die bei weitem ehrgei-zigsten Projekte. Im Jahre 1698 wurde schließlich die neunte und als Krönung seines Werkes als Festungsbaumeister angesehene Festung in Angriff genommen: Neuf-Brisach. 1 Seit 2007 als Unesco-Weltkulturerbe eingetragen, ist sie wohl eine der bekanntesten Leistungen Vaubans, und dennoch ist die Festungsstadt Neubreisach bisher noch weitgehend unbekannt geblieben! Innerhalb der Entwicklung des Bastionärsystems wurde das in Neubreisach verwendete Muster später als sogenannte 3. Manier Vaubans bezeichnet (franz. Front de Neuf-Brisach). Vauban hat nicht in solchen Typologien gedacht, er hat seine Entwürfe immer dem Gelände angepasst und dafür die beste Festungsarchitektur entwickelt. In den alten Traktaten wie in der neuzeitliche Fachliteratur reichlich erwähnt, als Lehrobjekt für Ingenieure und Genie-Offiziere benutzt, sind Beschreibung wie auch Abbildungen von Neubreisach öfters falsch oder zumindest als mangelhaft zu bezeichnen (Abb. 1 = Taf. VIII). 2 Das ist eine weitere Hürde, die der Festungsforscher zu überwinden hat. Natürlich blieb auch Neubreisach von den Jahrhunderten nicht verschont. Umfangreiche Veränderungen wurden im Laufe der Zeit an den Befestigungsanlagen vorgenommen. Insbesondere nach der Belagerung von 1870 und den dabei entstandenen Schäden durch die Bombardierung, wurde Neubreisach, jetzt eine deutsche Festung, für eine neue Rolle als Kernpunkt des Brückenkopfes am Oberrhein eingerichtet und demgemäß vielfach, auch festungsbaumäßig, verändert. Obwohl diese Periode nach 1871 von größtem Interesse wäre, werden wir uns hauptsächlich dem Vaubanschen Meisterwerk von seinem Ursprung bis 1870 widmen.

En restituant avec précision une période essentielle de l’histoire de la restauration de peinture, ce livre ouvre de nouvelles perspectives pour la recherche en histoire de l’art et souligne que les œuvres sont perpétuellement transformées et instables. Chaque modification invite à redéfinir ce qu’est un tableau, au gré des époques et des pays. L’activité de restauration s’apparente alors à une forme de réception mais aussi de recréation des peintures, dans laquelle le geste est inséparable de la pensée, et la pratique de la théorie.

Cette communication a eu lieu le 31 mars 2017, dans le cadre du séminaire doctoral d'Alexandre Gady. Elle fut l'occasion de révéler une documentation inédite permettant de porter un nouveau regard sur le projet de place Louis XVI destiné à la cité du Ponant en 1786.

This study seeks to understand transformations in the modern capitalist World-economy in the North Atlantic. It specifically treats the material culture of four French shipwrecks dating from 1700 to 1760 :  la Dauphine (1704), l'Alcide (1747), l'Aimable Grenot (1749) and le Machault (1760). The starting point of this study is  the standardization of European material culture and the growing interstate exchanges in
an ever-stronger and integrated World-economy, or economic globalization. This study is built progressively, from the low-Ievel analysis of shipwreck assemblages to their global interpretation in conceptual terms, using three functional artefact groups: cargo, shipboard equipment and personal objects. The author seeks to identify the shipboard function of different artefacts and find their provenance, in order to study the production, the commercialization and the diffusion of the different productions found on the shipwrecks. He seeks a  closer understanding of the trends and dynamics underlying the European Atlantic economy during the I8th century, when the most powerful states of Western Europe fought for military and economic control of the continent.

Cette étude cherche à  comprendre les transformations en cours au sein de l'économie-monde capitaliste moderne. Elle s'intéresse spécifiquement à l'étude de la culture matérielle de quatre épaves
françaises datant de la  période 1704-1760 : la Dauphine (1704), l'Alcide
(1747), l'Aimable Grenot (1749) et le Machault (1760). La question centrale qui guide cette thèse est celle de l'uniformisation de la culture matérielle européenne, liée à l'accroissement des échanges interétatiques au sein d'une économie-monde atlantique intégrative, c'est-à-dire avec la  globalisation des marchés. La thèse se construit de manière progressive, de l'étude fonctionnelle et contextuelle des collections d'épaves à  leur interprétation en termes économiques plus larges, en fonction de trois classes fonctionnelles maritimes: les cargaisons, le  matériel de bord et les objets personnels. Après avoir organisé les artefacts pour chaque épave selon une grille fonctionnelle originale, l'auteur s'attache à reconnaître les fonctions à  bord des objets et à  retrouver leur provenance. Il tente alors d'analyser la production, la commercialisation et l'ampleur de la diffusion de chaque production, de manière à  comprendre les dynamiques en jeux au coeur de l'économie-monde atlantique au début du XVIIIe siècle, où s'affrontent les principaux États de l'Europe occidentale.

Bien que représentant un cas particulier, le Livre d'Echantillons Fol Est 489 constitue un bon exemple de la manière dont un recueil à destination d'un homme de l'art était composé au milieu du XVIIIe siècle. Éléments pratiques et didactiques y forment un vaste ensemble dans lequel le propriétaire pouvait puiser des idées et des formes, adaptables et combinables au gré de son imagination et des exigences de ses commanditaires. Il témoigne aussi du coût qu'un tel objet pouvait constituer, investissement assez onéreux pour un simple artisan. Il reflète, enfin, comment le goût de la période rocaille se diffusa dans les ateliers qui portèrent cette « mode » que Blondel fustige dans ses Cours d’Architecture.

This encyclopaedia entry summarizes the knowledge about Peyre le jeune, the less well know brother of the famous architect Marie-Josephe Peyre, who finished for example the palace at Koblenz as one of the most important examples of early classicism in the Rhine-valley.

Depuis le début du XVIIIe siècle, le concept d’un lieu situé à l’abri de tous les regards et voué aux plaisirs du libertin a envahi la littérature romanesque et théâtrale (Diderot, Sade, Crébillon, etc.). Les rapports de police et les chroniques scandaleuses regorgent également d’anecdotes piquantes à ce sujet, contribuant ainsi à créer le mythe de la « petite maison ».
Cependant, il faut attendre les années 1750 et la construc- tion du pavillon La Bouëxière pour voir émerger un nouveau type architectural dont le programme s’élabore peu à peu. S’initie alors une vague de réflexions sur ce nouveau mode d’habitat et tous les quartiers périphériques de la capitale se couvrent d’édifices aux allures diverses mais répondant aux mêmes critères architecturaux : renouvellement des dispositifs conventionnels, réduction de la taille des appartements, adoption du plan massé et situation dans un environnement paysager.
La multiplication de ces petites maisons illustre par ailleurs l’émergence d’un nouvel art de vivre et les aspirations d’une société en mutation qui use de toutes les ressources des arts (architecture, jardin, peinture, sculpture...) pour créer de véritables écrins qui ne laisseront pas indifférent le public de l’époque.
Remontant jusqu’aux origines de l’habitat pavillonnaire, cette étude vise à montrer que si le phénomène des périphéries pavillonnaires a jusqu’alors été plutôt attribué aux retombées de la révolution industrielle et à la création de cités ouvrières, les prémices se font sentir dès la fin du XVIIIe siècle.
Un ouvrage ambitieux et richement illustré qui sollicite l’histoire de l’architecture et des jardins, mais également l’histoire des idées, de la littérature et du théâtre, de la politique et de la ville.

Mini-mémoire réalisé en deuxième année de Master, dans le cadre d'un séminaire sur Poullain de La Barre et la recherche de l'égalité des sexes. Je me suis intéressée ici aux enjeux d'un texte latin parodique du XVIe siècle, traduit en français au XVIIIe siècle, qui veut démontrer en imitant une secte chrétienne hérétique que les femmes ne sont pas des êtres humains, en prenant comme socle de son raisonnement le texte biblique et un événement historique bien réel, à savoir le concile de Mâcon (en 585 de notre ère environ), qui débattit sur la question de l'humanité des femmes...

This essay reappraises the origins of French Quakerism based on new archival research conducted on both sides of the Channel. It identifies 34 Quaker missionaries in 17th- and early 18C France, sheds new light on the French reception of Quakerism and suggests possible connections with non-violent, charismatic movements in Languedoc.

В статье рассматриваются источники информации о гамбургском (?) художнике Франкарте, работавшем в России в конце 1730х-начале 1740х годов. Анализируется переход информации из одного справочного издания в другое и выявляются изменения, сделанные при этом. Ставится под сомнение гамбургское происхождение Франкарта. Рассматриваются записи об Иоганне Балтазаре Франкарте в метрических книгах лютеранских церквей Петербурга и делается вывод, что это не искомый художник. Предлагается расширить круг поисков информации, включив в него архивы Франции и Бельгии.

First national study on these tragic incidents in a historical framework. At the time of the Enlightenment, one of the most remote areas of France was caught up in a traumatic situation which lasted for three years and caused feelings to run high. The 'Beast' of Gévaudan attacked and killed dozens of people, mostly women and children, and dragged their bodies off into the forests to devour. What was this monster, which the most skilful hunters in the kingdom were sent to track down ? The mass of differing theories have done just as much to obscure the events as to cast light on them; high time, then, for a proper historian to re-examine the facts. Jean-Marc Moriceau, a recognized authority on rural life and on the relationship between wolves and humans, has taken up the challenge. In the pages of his account, a forgotten land comes back to life: a society marked by harsh inequality, where strangers are treated with suspicion; a society in which people barely manage to eke out a living, and that only by dint of constant toil. As we read through the original archives, we get to know more about every one of the young individuals who were caught up, between the years of 1764 and 1765, in the greatest calamity in the entire history of the province.

If the greatness of a philosophical work can be measured by the volume and vehemence of the public response, there is little question that Rousseau's Social Contract stands out as a masterpiece. Within a week of its publication in 1762 it was banished from France. Soon thereafter, Rousseau fled to Geneva, where he saw the book burned in public. At the same time, many of his contemporaries, such as Kant, considered Rousseau to be “the Newton of the moral world,” as he was the first philosopher to draw attention to the basic dignity of human nature. The Social Contract has never ceased to be read in the 250 years since it was written. Rousseau's “Social Contract”: An Introduction offers a thorough and systematic tour of this notoriously paradoxical and challenging text. David Lay Williams offers readers a chapter-by-chapter reading of the Social Contract, squarely confronting these interpretive obstacles, leaving no stones unturned. The conclusion connects Rousseau's text both to his important influences and those who took inspiration and sometimes exception to his arguments. The book also features a special extended appendix dedicated to outlining his famous conception of the general will, which has been the object of controversy since the Social Contract's publication.

Disputes for Minorca among the colonial powers during the 18th century (France, England and Spain) had their reflection in a number of medals and tokens. Behind them, there is the story of several episodes of the tensions in which they were involve. This article pretends to list all of these medals.

Did women engage in the making of architecture before the nineteenth century? Although most professions requiring specialized knowledge were deemed socially unsuitable for women, women did play active roles in the built environment in Western Europe before the Industrial Age.  Elite and bourgeois women influenced architectural design as patrons and advisors, and women of lesser means were on occasion employed in building-related crafts and construction labor.  Women’s earliest activities as true designers and builders can be linked to the cultural phenomenon of the Renaissance.  The rediscovery of Antiquity was a catalyst that transformed the identity of the architect and opened the traditional building industry to those who were not master builders.  Both men and women began to design and build as artist-architects and as amateurs.  Yet, these women engaged architecture mostly from the margins of the profession.  Nineteenth-century industrialization brought a dynamic change in the nature of work and lifestyles, opening the door for greater numbers of women to work outside the home. The mechanization of the building industry and changing attitudes towards women’s education and work paved the path for women to move slowly from the margins towards the center of specialized knowledge in the craft and profession of architecture in the twentieth century.

Contrairement à ce qui est traditionnellement écrit, la période de la Régence ne fut pas une période de « belle endormie » pour le château de Saint-Cloud. Les gazettes montrent en effet que les fêtes, comme au Palais-Royal à Paris, s’y succédèrent. Pour les accueillir, le Régent put profiter du château mais surtout du parc. A la fin de sa vie, il pensa même y conduire d’importants travaux. La mort du prince empêcha leur mise en œuvre, mais ils sont connus par des dessins de l’architecte Oppenord.

Ingénieur de la Marine et « architecte par goût », Jean-Nicolas Trouille est une figure étonnante à plus d’un titre. Fils d’un cordonnier versaillais, il obtient un poste de dessinateur au port de Brest en 1776 et se voit confier d’importants projets de construction à partir de 1787. L’agrandissement de la nouvelle Intendance de la Marine et la reconstruction du Refuge Royal lui permettent de développer des techniques structurelles innovantes ainsi qu’un langage décoratif qui tranche avec les usages brestois. L’objet de cette conférence était de présenter ces innovations et de chercher à comprendre comment Jean-Nicolas Trouille, architecte autodidacte, a pu se les approprier.

Sophie Germain (1776-1831) was a prize-winning female mathematician who earned the friendship and well-deserved respect of contemporary leading mathematicians including Joseph-Louis Lagrange and Carl Friedrich Gauss. Within the history of science, however, she is remembered chiefly as a recluse and as a female anomaly in an otherwise male scientific tradition. Through her career, this paper examines late eighteenth-century female education in the sciences and the treatment accorded women who sought access to the leading scientific communities of Revolutionary and Napoleonic France.
The Revolution ushered in a brief and exciting era of openness for female participation in the public sphere between 1789-1793. Philosophers like the Marquis de Condorcet (himself a mathematician) were strenuous advocates of women’s right to an equal education in the early 1790s, including advanced instruction in the sciences. Nonetheless Germain, then a young girl from a wealthy middle-class Parisian family, received only the most haphazard of educations. Her early years were spent studying mathematics covertly at night, against her parents’ objections. In 1794, a year after women were banned from all public and political activities, the Ecole Polytechnique opened in Paris as a national training ground for scientists and mathematicians. Unsurprisingly, it only admitted male students. Germain bypassed this restriction by assuming a male identity in order to advance her education at the school. The brilliant Lagrange, who was in charge of the mathematics course, eventually uncovered Germain’s deception. He became the first in a series of important mentors to supervise her mathematical education, ultimately culminating in her correspondence with Gauss. This led to her enduring contribution to mathematics: a breakthrough solution of many cases of Fermat’s Last Theorem.
Throughout her life, Germain disdained “female” education and avoided all association with other scientific women. Instead she chose to follow a strictly male path in her education and scholarly pursuits, finding mentoring and validation exclusively from male authorities. Given the existence of at least several successful eighteenth-century women scientists who might have provided female role models for Germain, this paper asks whether such women amounted to a  female scientific tradition, whether it was well enough known for Germain to have followed it, why she chose not to avail herself of it, and how that decision may have influenced her career.

Nell'ambito del sistema della moda la parrucca assume in modo esemplare il valore di codice polisemantico. La sua diffusione pervasiva – si direbbe il trionfo – dalla metà del secolo XVII alla fine del XVIII è diventato un capitolo simbolico della storia culturale europea: "la parrucca è la cosa più barocca di tutto il barocco" (Huizinga, Homo ludens).
Significativo e, per più versi, sorprendente lo studio di un'operetta finora trascurata, ascritta al nome fittizio del 'conciateste Bartelemi': "Enciclopedia per pettinarsi, nella quale si trovano descritte quali pettinature convengono alli signori allegri, malinconici, pazzi, serj ... opera nella quale oltre essere conservato il carattere particolare delle parucche per gli artigiani, per li medici ... vi si suggerisce l'uso delle polveri celeste, rossa. Edizione arricchita di quarantacinque stampe in rame, nelle quali sono incise le pettinature e li loro nomi, in Venezia, si vende alla libreria del Graziosi a S. Salvador e presso tutti li libraj che vendono le novità, 1769".
Apparente enigma letterario e bibliografico, è risultata un vero e proprio pastiche, la trasposizione/traduzione in italiano di un testo satirico pubblicato a Parigi nel 1757 con il titolo: "Enciclopédie perruquiere: ouvrage curieux a l'usage de toutes sortes de têtes, enrichi de figures en taille-douce par M. Beaumont, Amsterdam et se trouve a Paris, Chez l'Auteur et chez Hochereau libraire ..., 1757.
Dietro il complicato e surreale gioco degli specchi di personaggi fittizi si nasconde Jean-Henri Marchand (+ 1785), scrittore ancora poco noto, poligrafo camaleontico e autore di parodie e divertissement con una caratteristica saliente: l’ammirazione per Voltaire, di cui imitò lo stile e parodiò le opere.
L'edizione veneziana nasce come operazione orchestrata dalla cerchia intellettuale che operava nell'orbita del libraio Antonio Graziosi (Venezia, 1741 – Venezia, 1818), interprete attento del gusto dei lettori del tempo, e nella redazione del giornale "Notizie del mondo", da lui edito dal 1769 al 1812.
Autore delle incisioni è Antonio Baratti (1724-1787), uno tra i più fecondi e rinomati artisti dell’illustrazione libraria dell’epoca, a cui si devono tra l’altro le 997 tavole calcografiche dell’edizione livornese dell’"Encyclopédie".

Very few documents allow historians to see Robespierre at work as a lawyer. His professional correspondence, his petitions, consultations, pleadings and other documents related to his profession have practically all disappeared, with the exception of his factums (or legal briefs), almost all of which have been preserved. This exceptional corpus of twelve printed legal briefs allows us access to an aspect of his work as a defence lawyer, that of author of factums, which constitute a veritable legal genre. By studying them, it is possible to analyse the techniques used by Robespierre to attempt to make a case famous and to win over both recipients of these documents, namely the judges and the public.
