Ancient Topography (Archaeology)

Knowledge of underwater topography is essential to the understanding of the organisation and distribution of archaeological sites along and in water bodies. Special attention has to be paid to intertidal and inshore zones where, due to sea-level rise, coastlines have changed and many former coastal sites are now submerged in shallow water. Mapping the detailed inshore topography is therefore important to reconstruct former coastlines, identify sunken archaeological structures and locate potential former harbour sites. However, until recently archaeology has lacked suitable methods to provide the required topographical data of shallow underwater bodies. Our research shows that airborne topo-bathymetric laser scanner systems are able to measure surfaces above and below the water table over large areas in high detail using very short and narrow green laser pulses, even revealing sunken archaeological structures in shallow water. Using an airborne laser scanner operating at a wavelength in the green visible spectrum (532 nm) two case study areas in different environmental settings (Kolone, Croatia, with clear sea water; Lake Keutschach, Austria, with turbid water) were scanned. In both cases, a digital model of the underwater topography with a planimetric resolution of a few decimeters was measured. While in the clear waters of Kolone penetration depth was up to 11 meters, turbid Lake Keutschach allowed only to document the upper 1.6 meters of its underwater topography. Our results demonstrate the potential of this technique to map submerged archaeological structures over large areas in high detail providing the possibility for systematic, large scale archaeological investigation of this environment.

Il sesto capitolo entra nel merito dell'intero ciclo di gestione dei dati del progetto, illustrando le varie fasi e le rispettive problematiche nella gestione ed elaborazione delle informazioni.
Nello specifico: metodi e criteri per la registrazione dei dati (differenziati sulla base delle fonti e degli ambiti di rinvenimento e trattati anche nella prospettiva delle modalità di georeferenziazione), per la loro interrogazione e organizzazione (creazione di tematismi), elaborazione (varie tipologie di analisi dei dati) e restituzione (da quella cartacea al web-GIS).
Il capitolo termina con la presentazione (a cura di Stefano Bertoldi) delle piattaforme web-GIS dell'Area di Archeologia Medievale dell'Università di Siena.

„Das Waldviertel – Ein Burgenviertel?“ Diese lapidare Feststellung trifft voll und ganz auf das Waldviertel zu – nirgendwo sonst in Ostösterreich findet sich eine solche Dichte an Burgen und Adelssitzen. Die Marktgemeinde Gars am Kamp, am Ostrand des Waldviertels, am Übergang zum Weinviertel gelegen, umfasst auf einer Gesamtfläche von ca. 50,5 km² 14 Katastralgemeinden. Auf das gesamte Gemeindegebiet entfallen insgesamt 15 Ansitze, davon gelten sieben als fraglich oder heute nicht mehr vorhanden. Die meisten der mittelalterlichen Wehrbauten sind heute weitgehend abgekommen bzw. allenfalls als Ruinen oder Burghügel mit den Außenbefestigungen in Form von Wall und Graben erhalten. Gleichwohl finden sich in und um Gars einige der hervorragendsten Beispiele der mittelalterlichen Wehr- und Repräsentationsarchitektur Niederösterreichs.

Abstract
The Aqua Traiana aqueduct, built by Emperor Trajan in 109 A.D., was the tenth of the eleven aqueducts of
ancient Rome. It collected water from many aquifer sources in the hills around the volcanic basin of Lake
Bracciano, in the Sabatini Mountains, and reached Rome with a mostly underground conduit. One of the caput
aquae of the aqueduct was located SE of Oriolo Romano, in an area that is today known as Santa Fiora. From
here a duct descended to the lake to join a similar duct coming from the Grotte Renara Valley. Unlike the latter,
the Santa Fiora branch was cut sometime in the past between the sixth and ninth centuries and never restored,
thereafter forgotten. By carrying out a thorough investigation on the territory, the authors found and explored it,
reconstructing the route in detail. Here we try to explain the construction characteristics of the duct, including
its wells and creek crossing. Finally we discuss the way in which the water could drop the considerable difference
in height between the sources and the lake.

Riassunto
L’acquedotto Traiano, realizzato per volere dell’imperatore Traiano nel 109 d.C., è il decimo degli undici
acquedotti di Roma antica. Raccoglieva le acque di molte sorgenti attorno al lago di Bracciano, sui monti Sabatini,
e raggiungeva Roma con un percorso in gran parte sotterraneo. Uno dei caput aquae dell’acquedotto era situato
a SE di Oriolo Romano, in una zona nota oggi come Santa Fiora. Da qui un condotto scendeva verso il lago per
ricongiungersi con un analogo condotto proveniente dal fosso di Grotte Renara. Diversamente da quest’ultimo, il
ramo proveniente da Santa Fiora fu tagliato in un’epoca imprecisata tra il VI e il IX secolo e mai più ripristinato,
tanto da essere del tutto dimenticato. Gli autori, effettuando una accurata indagine sul territorio, hanno potuto
ritrovarlo ed esplorarlo, ricostruendone dettagliatamente il percorso. Vengono illustrate le caratteristiche costruttive
del condotto, dei pozzi e degli attraversamenti dei fossi. Viene infine discusso del modo con cui le acque superavano
il notevole dislivello esistente tra le sorgenti e il lago.
