Machine learning is set to have a profound impact on the graphic design industry in the near future. Despite its proximity, graphic design education and practice are largely sidelined from participating in the highly scientized spheres of computational aesthetics and applied image processing. Within this context, designer Sekyeong Kwon sought to make visible some of the cultural and practical implications of AI-powered design, from a graphic design perspective. The resulting practice-led project, Michael Barnes, falls within the subfield of adversarial design, and seeks to provoke contestation and debate around automation in design. The following short paper briefly sketches out the current graphic design landscape in relation to emerging technologies; outlines Michael Barnes; and explores a number of issues raised by the project including questions around (inter alia) aesthetics, authorship, and representation.

Physicists have applied the ability of machine learning algorithms to learn from experience to one of the biggest challenges currently facing quantum computing: quantum error correction, which is used to design noise-tolerant quantum computing protocols. [15]

Machine learning algorithms are designed to improve as they encounter more data, making them a versatile technology for understanding large sets of photos such as those accessible from Google Images. Elizabeth Holm, professor of materials science and engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, is leveraging this technology to better understand the enormous number of research images accumulated in the field of materials science. With the help of artificial intelligence, chemists from the University of Basel in Switzerland have computed the characteristics of about two million crystals made up of four chemical elements. The researchers were able to identify 90 previously unknown thermodynamically stable crystals that can be regarded as new materials. [12]
The artificial intelligence system's ability to set itself up quickly every morning and compensate for any overnight fluctuations would make this fragile technology much more useful for field measurements, said co-lead researcher Dr Michael Hush from UNSW ADFA. [11]
Quantum physicist Mario Krenn and his colleagues in the group of Anton Zeilinger from the Faculty of Physics at the University of Vienna and the Austrian Academy of Sciences have developed an algorithm which designs new useful quantum experiments. As the computer does not rely on human intuition, it finds novel unfamiliar solutions. [10]
Researchers at the University of Chicago's Institute for Molecular Engineering and the University of Konstanz have demonstrated the ability to generate a quantum logic operation, or rotation of the qubit, that - surprisingly—is intrinsically resilient to noise as well as to variations in the strength or duration of the control. Their achievement is based on a geometric concept known as the Berry phase and is implemented through entirely optical means within a single electronic spin in diamond. [9]
New research demonstrates that particles at the quantum level can in fact be seen as behaving something like billiard balls rolling along a table, and not merely as the probabilistic smears that the standard interpretation of quantum mechanics suggests. But there's a catch - the tracks the particles follow do not always behave as one would expect from "realistic" trajectories, but often in a fashion that has been termed "surrealistic." [8]

There are two ways how the emergence of the Biosphere as a single living being could be understood. One, that it is the latest stage of the evolution of life on Earth that began some 4 billion years ago, from smallest and simplest organisms to the larger and more complex. Another would be, that entire development of life was just an embryonic growth of the largest the most complex living being on Earth. Since the Biosphere is and will be quite a complex organism, it is almost certain that will acquire some kind of intelligence as a single being (entity). Although it will be dominated by the human component of its being, it will include some other living beings as well. However, how this intelligence will manifest itself is hard to anticipate or imagine at this point. In addition to possible self-awareness, it might be able to acquire some other properties unknown even unimaginable to us.

The major project goal of the ISTforCE project is to provide an open, human-centered Web-based collaboration environment which supports concurrent engineering while working on multiple projects simultaneously and offers easy access to specialized engineering services distributed over the Web. Normally, engineering applications are bought and then installed and used locally, but in the last years there is a growing interest, especially by small, highly specialised vendors, to offer such applications on rental or "pay per use" basis. The main innovation of ISTforCE is in the human-centred approach enabling the integration of multiple applications and services for multiple users and on multi-project basis. This should lead to support the work of each user across projects and team boundaries and to establish a common platform where providers of software and end users (engineers, architects, technicians, project managers) can meet. This paper will focus on three specific aspects of the ISTforCE project. The first addresses product data models also referred to as Building Information Models (BIMs) given the specific scope of the application domain dealt with and also covers the contribution of ISTforCE to standardization activities, either within the frame of ISO / STEP or of the IAI and the development of the Industry Foundation Classes. The second will address part of the software architecture designed to support concurrent engineering activities with the development of the Product Data server (PDS) and finally we will cover AI based applications, more specifically in the area of automated building conformance checking (CCS).

As artificial intelligence (AI) systems become more sophisticated and play a larger role in society, arguments that they should have some form of legal personality gain credence. The arguments are typically framed in instrumental terms, with comparisons to juridical persons such as corporations. Implicit in those arguments, or explicit in their illustrations and examples, is the idea that as AI systems approach the point of indistinguishability from humans they should be entitled to a status comparable to natural persons. This article contends that although most legal systems could create a novel category of legal persons, such arguments are insufficient to show that they should.

Researchers have developed a system using artificial intelligence that can edit the facial expressions of actors to accurately match dubbed voices, saving time and reducing costs for the film industry. [30] Computer scientists in Australia teamed up with an expert in the University of Toronto's department of English to design an algorithm that writes poetry following the rules of rhyme and metre. [29] For the first time, physicists have demonstrated that machine learning can reconstruct a quantum system based on relatively few experimental measurements. [28] AlphaZero plays very unusually; not like a human, but also not like a typical computer. Instead, it plays with "real artificial" intelligence. [27] Predictions for an AI-dominated future are increasingly common, but Antoine Blondeau has experience in reading, and arguably manipulating, the runes—he helped develop technology that evolved into predictive texting and Apple's Siri. [26] Artificial intelligence can improve health care by analyzing data from apps, smartphones and wearable technology. [25] Now, researchers at Google's DeepMind have developed a simple algorithm to handle such reasoning—and it has already beaten humans at a complex image comprehension test. [24] A marimba-playing robot with four arms and eight sticks is writing and playing its own compositions in a lab at the Georgia Institute of Technology. The pieces are generated using artificial intelligence and deep learning. [23] Now, a team of researchers at MIT and elsewhere has developed a new approach to such computations, using light instead of electricity, which they say could vastly improve the speed and efficiency of certain deep learning computations. [22] Physicists have found that the structure of certain types of quantum learning algorithms is very similar to their classical counterparts—a finding that will help scientists further develop the quantum versions. [21] We should remain optimistic that quantum computing and AI will continue to improve our lives, but we also should continue to hold companies, organizations, and governments accountable for how our private data is used, as well as the technology's impact on the environment. [20]

One of the principal themes the NATO Science and Technology Organization (STO) is fostering in 2017 is "Military Decision Making using the tools of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI)". Simulation might play a significant role to play in these developments as it can act as a testbed for such concepts and support the military decision makers in future operations that are enhanced by AI. Simulation is already making a significant impact in the development of AI outside of the defence sector. Companies such as DeepMind and Nvidia are using computer games and simulations to " train " AI and autonomous systems, analogous to humans training in simulations. The rate of progress is high, driven by increases in computing power, availability of data and improved algorithms. AI can now " beat " humans at many computer and board games and is moving towards tackling more strategic games that have parallels with military C2. If such developments translate into the defence sphere then we could foresee humans and autonomous systems training in the same simulation systems, both separately and together, and the AI in the autonomous system being the same as that in the simulation. As autonomous systems proliferate across the nations, M&S technology and techniques might be used to improve the interoperability of autonomous systems. To maximise such synergies, it will be essential that NATO embraces all communities that have an interest in AI. Assessing the risks of potential adversary's use of AI and commercial autonomous systems is also necessary. Despite recent advances, AI development still faces significant technological and ethical challenges and these must be monitored and addressed as necessary.

Is attention both necessary and sufficient for consciousness? Call this central question of this treatise, “Q.” We commonly have the experience of consciously paying attention to something, but is it possible to be conscious of something you are not attending to, or to attend to something of which you are not conscious? Where might we find examples of these?
This treatise is a quest to find an answer to Q in two parts. Part I reviews the foundations upon which the discourse on Q is built. Different inputs to Q produce different answers. After consideration of the many ways “attention” and “consciousness” have been defined, I settle upon phenomenal consciousness and Executive Attention (defined as a suite of strategies for structuring cognition for further processing implemented by the executive of working memory) as the most interesting inputs to Q, and the ones on which Part II focuses.
Attention without consciousness seems relatively easy to establish empirically, but consciousness without attention is much harder. The putative candidates all seem to have major problems, but I build a strong abductive case for the hitherto ignored case of foveal phenomenal overflow. We consciously see far more detail in our foveal fields than we can Executively Attend, although there is a serious obstacle to our ever confirming that empirically—identifying conscious content relies on Executive Attentional report. Triangulating the capacity limitations of attention, consciousness, and working memory strengthens this case for consciousness without attention, and suggests that cognition must work something like my “Witches’ Hat Model,” on which content can become conscious outside of Executive Attention or working memory. I conclude with some reflections on the implications of my arguments for the discourse on Q, and for other discourses such as the ontologies of attention and consciousness, theories of consciousness, some other cognitive concepts, and ethical considerations in humans, animals, and machines. A conclusive answer to Q continues to elude us. It may perhaps be an ultimately insoluble conundrum. But it is the very essence of humanity to seek an answer, and in so doing, to improve our understanding of our own nature:
“The proper study of mankind is man.”

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) machines using deep learning neural networks to create material that facially looks like it should be protected by copyright is growing exponentially. From articles in national news media to music, film, poetry and painting, AI machines create material that has economic value and that competes with productions of human authors. The Article reviews both normative and doctrinal arguments for and against the protection by copyright of literary and artistic productions made by AI machines. The Article finds that the arguments in favor of protection are flawed and unconvincing and that a proper analysis of the history, purpose, and major doctrines of copyright law all lead to the conclusion that productions that do not result from human creative choices belong to the public domain. The Article proposes a test to determine which productions should be protected, including in case of collaboration between human and machine. Finally, the Article applies the proposed test to three specific fact patterns to illustrate its application.

This paper presents the connection between exam or test anxiety and the il-licit use of Ritalin (methylphenidate). Ritalin is used by students as a cog-nitive enhancer and thus to increase their learning and memory abilities. However, a side effect of Ritalin is altered fear reactions to stimuli. Thus, this paper aims to gain insight in the mechanisms of Ritalin on the anxiety system. The created network visualises the overlapping systems of Ritalin and anxiety and possible outcomes of the use of Ritalin around exam weeks. First, the exam is noticed, with the induced (normal) stress response on having this exam. The wish to increase learning abilities during exam weeks surfaces and Ritalin is administered as a result of cognitive decision making. Finally, the model shows how Ritalin can decrease test anxiety.

In this study, the researcher has advocated the importance of human intelligence in language learning since software or any Learning Management System (LMS) cannot be programmed to understand the human context as well as all the linguistic structures contextually. This study examined the extent to which language learning is perilous to machine learning and its programs such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Pattern Recognition, and Image Analysis used in much assistive learning techniques such as voice detection, face detection and recognition, personalized assistants, besides language learning programs. The researcher argues that language learning is closely associated with human intelligence, human neural networks and no computers or software can claim to replace or replicate those functions of human brain. This study thus posed a challenge to natural language processing (NLP) techniques that claimed having taught a computer how to understand the way humans learn, to understand text without any clue or calculation, to realize the ambiguity in human languages in terms of the juxtaposition between the context and the meaning, and also to automate the language learning process between computers and humans. The study cites evidence of deficiencies in such machine learning software and gadgets to prove that in spite of all technological advancements there remain areas of human brain and human intelligence where a computer or its software cannot enter. These deficiencies highlight the limitations of AI and super intelligence systems of machines to prove that human intelligence would always remain superior.

Successful athletic performance requires precision in many respects. A batter stands behind home plate awaiting the arrival of a ball that is less than three inches in diameter and moving close to 100 mph. His goal is to hit it with a ba­­t that is also less than three inches in diameter. This impressive feat requires extraordinary temporal and spatial coordination. The sweet spot of the bat must be at the same place, at the same time, as the ball. A basketball player must keep a ball bouncing as she speeds from one end of the court to another, evading defensive players. She may never break pace as she lifts from the ground, throwing the ball fifteen feet toward a hoop that is eighteen inches in diameter. One task facing a psychologist involves explaining how the body does such things within the sometimes very demanding spatial and temporal constraints that a given task imposes. Part of the goal of this chapter is to sketch the commitments of an embodied approach to such an explanation. We shall see that an embodied account of motor skills draws concepts that depart radically from more traditional cognitivist theories of motor activity. Similarly, because an embodied approach to cognition introduces new ways to understand the human capacity for social interaction, it also promises to shed new light on how athletes coordinate their actions with each other.

In this digital era, the explosion of internet of things and linked devices, Cyber Security experts face a lot of challenges. The experts need all the help to prevent attacks and security breaches and respond to the attacks. The number of connected workplaces lead to heavy traffic, more security attack vectors, security breaches and lot more that the cyber area cannot be handled by humans while not sizeable automation. However, it is troublesome to develop software system with standard mounted algorithms (hard-wired logic on deciding level) for effectively defensive against the dynamically growing attacks in networks. It has become obvious that many cyber security problems is also resolved with success solely strategies of AI area unit obtaining used. This paper presents a swift survey of cyber security computing applications and analyses the views of improving the cyber security capabilities by suggesting Artificial Intelligence applications, and the already existing methods.

The number of institutions offering machine learning courses is on the rise. Supplementary materials that help teach these courses fail to address one of the most important steps of the machine learning process, namely identifying a problem, and determining whether it is appropriate for machine learning. We address this problem by first reviewing frameworks in extant work, then proposing a decision flow to help students determine whether an input-output relationship is appropriate for machine learning. Following the discussion of the steps in the decision flow, we present a course assignment that reinforces the concepts in the decision flow. We conclude by discussing the lessons learned after using this assignment in a graduate class.

It has become a discipline that attempts to answer real-world problems. Artificial intelligence systems are nowadays widely used in economics and medicine, design or military. The role of archives is changing worldwide. In this grandiose transformation, archives need to be at the forefront of their own future, so that they can steer, guide, and not lose out.
The vast masses of information in archives provide an excellent platform for the exploitation of artificial intelligence. The mass of data can be a great help not only for research but also for policy preparation and in some areas of public administration in the not too distant future.

This special issue on AI and robots in service interactions of the Journal of Service Management Research aims to contribute and elaborated our understanding of the new challenges organizations, employees and customers face due to the infusion of service robot- and AI-facilitated and automated interactions in the service encounter. For service organizations, it is essential to recognize and evaluate service robots’ potential not only for their own organizational success, but also for the well-being of their employees and acceptance, and the quality perception and satisfaction of their customers.

We will start with a short introduction into service robots and AI before we introduce the four papers of this special issue. We use the topics of these papers as a starting point and discuss implications for future research in this emerging field.

Objectives: The main objective of research is to identify a valid model that ensures the capabilities of national counterintelligence interests in the processes of identification, analysis and response to hybrid threats in cyberspace associated with the national security strategy taking into account the capabilities provided by advanced artificial intelligence. Based on this strategic approach, provide key factors for roadmap of adoption in the process of introducing disruptive technologies in counter-intelligence processes for maximization of results in technology adoption. Methodology: The applied research methodology is mixed. It will combine qualitative and quantitative criteria according to the proposed objectives by each research phase.

It is only fitting to conclude the encyclopedia with the last 2 books I printed on the economic system and the extinction of the earth to get to the magic number of 60 that completes the hexadecalogic structure of the universe. So I am republishing at academia the books i published every decade in world war III since 30 years ago during my masters at Columbia University,  I discovered an error in the periodicity of the most important cycle of the science of economics, the Kondratieff cycle that separates the different St-ages of the Industrial r=evolution of machines.  Kondratieff analyzed the Industrial Revolution in Russia, concluding that for 50 years the train was the engine of its development; thus establishing a 50 year cycle of economical activity that bears his name. However in 3rd World countries machines arrive latter, when they have already evolved in the Industrial World. So the Russian cycle of steam was shorter than the World’s cycle. When we make an exhaustive analysis of the cycle in the Western World, where those machines were discovered, we find a longer 72 years generational cycle.  The causes of that exact 72±8 year cycle of global stock-crashes are simple. The Industrial Revolution is the Evolution of Machines & Money, energetic and informative systems, traditionally made of metal, which follow the laws of morphologic evolution. Machines and money evolve according to the energy and information, they use to become re=produced.
Humans evolve a new type of energy and information, derived from that energy, which renews all the machines and financial instruments of the economy every human generation of 72 years, in which a nation of ‘founding fathers’, captains of industries, their sons and grand-sons, reproduce and evolve a new energy, machine and form of money to its perfection. Yet at the end of the cycle, the machine and money becomes over-reproduced, saturating the market and provoking, due to a crisis of growth, a global economical crash. Those generations bring the nation that discovered the new energy to a top predator status of history, as the substance of which weapons are made.
—Thus, we had an age of steam machines, the age of England, between 1780s and 1857, followed by a crisis of overproduction of steam machines and stock-money that brought the 1857±7 years crashes of the train-based economy.
—From 1857 to 1929, we lived in the age of electro-chemical energies, machines and chemical explosives, dominated by Germany, followed by a crisis of overproduction of cars and radios, which caused the 1929 crash, 72 years after the train crash.
—It came then the III cycle of electronic machines, electronic money and Nuclear Bombs that took place from 1929-2001, the age of America; which again ended in the dotcom and mortgage crashes, 72+7 years after 1929.
- Followed by the Age of the Singularity, the IV Cycle of Evolution of machines, dominated by robots that would come after an age of global wars that unmistakably separated those cycles but was a taboo subject in the study of economics as a science.
And yet the dates of the war phase of Kondratiff’s cycle were clear. Each technological cycle started and ended in an age of global wars in which machines were reconverted into its ‘evil twins’, top predator weapons used then in a crescendo period of global wars, starting by ‘splendid little wars’ when those machines were tested in 3rd world countries, followed by an age of ‘civil wars’ in the peripheral regions of decadent, broken old empires, followed by an industrial all-out war between the old and new industrial powers of the cycle, concluding with a holocaust of the financial and military elites that carried the cycle to its conclusion. This part of the generNational cycle of global power was unsettling. So I researched in depth all its details before daring to write a paper for publication.
Then it came another disquieting surprise: scholar historic and economic magazines refused to publish; a book I wrote on the subject was rejected by over one hundred editorials and so I had to pay a small printing press (Bookmasters, Ohio) to print ‘Bio-History, Bio-Economics’, the full model which had by then grown to an entire analysis of Human history, since the cycle as most periodic processes of Nature had a longer and shorter decametric wave of 800 years cycles of evolution and reproduction of top predator weapons that erased all Eurasian civilinations (cultures divided in tribal nations that oppose each other in wars); the bronze, chariot, iron, coin, chivalry, gunpowder and digital age of weapons that now become the protagonists of III world war, and the short ±8 years cycle of splendid little wars.
So 30 years ago came out the first book on the series of World Wars, which I send to different think-tanks and Universities that ignored it, because of what I came to call the anti-quantum paradox: Unlike in physics where the scientist is so large it influences the observable in History the social scientist is inside the organism, either a fascist dictatorship or a capitalist society ruled by those company-mothers of machines and weapons and its lobbies that corrupt its politicos.
So they don’t distribute ideas against the cycle. And both sides of it, fascist dictators and capitalist speculators work to make it happen. But why to publish in smaller books, obscure academic outlets and blogs blocked in both blocks? Because after the war ends, and the ‘belli nervi, pecunia et cadaver infinita’ engine of war and its idol-ogies of nationalism (the worship of weapons) and capitalism (the worship of go(l)d) recede, there will be if humanity survives, a last chance for humanism, as there was the (wasted) chance of Bretton Woods and UNO, when humanity might humbly reflect on their Nature as ‘dust of spacetime’, and before returning to dust, reform the system along the organic, natural measures explained in the larger humanist model of those texts, which is the final evolution of a perfect, ideal world that serves the need of the 99%, not those of dictators & stockrats owners of arm companies that seek only power and profits with p-lineal momentum and manifest destiny all the way to hell.  There is still a window for peace if EU nations recognize NATO’s militarism was part of the problem, by-pass Zelenski’s TV-hero role & press hate memes, let Russia withdraw with honor, phasing out sanctions, offering both nations entrance to EU, as Putin might accept democratic reforms before retiring. But if those sanctions destroy Russia he’ll go into an all-out revenge Nuclear war before submitting. We are NOT justifying him but asking mankind to come to its senses before destroying itself once more.

Deepfakes bezeichnen Videos mit gefälschten Inhalten. Hierfür nutzen sie Technologien der Künstlichen Intelligenz, um Stimmen und Ähnlichkeiten zu überlagern, und können buchstäblich die Worte einer fremden Person in den Mund eines anderen legen. Deepfakes sind vor allem in sozialen Medien zu finden, und diese versuchen fieberhaft, die Verbreitung von diesen Inhalten auf ihren Plattformen zu steuern. In diesem Artikel wird vorgestellt, was Deepfakes sind, deren Typologien und Einsatzgebiete, sowie die Entstehung und Erkennung von Deepfakes.

In the field of computational creativity, the area of automatic
music generation deals with techniques that are able to automatically compose human-enjoyable music. Although investigations in the area started recently, numerous techniques based on artificial intelligence have been proposed. Some of them produce pleasant results, but none is able to effectively evolve the style of the musical pieces generated.

In this paper, we fill this gap by proposing an evolutionary memetic system that composes melodies, exploiting a society of virtual composers. An extensive validation, performed by using both quantitative and qualitative analyses, confirms that the system is able to evolve its compositional style over time.

Das Badische Landesmuseum verfolgt seit einigen Jahren die Umsetzung eines neuen Museumskonzepts, in dessen Zentrum die Neudefinition der Besucher*innen als aktive Nutzer*innen des Museums steht. Sind in den aktuellen Sammlungsausstellungen rund 13.000 Exponate zu sehen, wird durch die Öffnung der Depots Schritt für Schritt der Gesamtbestand von etwa500.000 Objekten erschlossen und zugänglich gemacht. Wie in einem „Archiv der Sachkultur“ erhalten die Nutzer*innen Zugang zu ihrem kulturellen Erbe.
