No serious study of ancient Roman topography and its monuments is undertaken without consulting the work of Rodolfo Lanciani (1845-1929), the archaeologist and scholar of ancient Rome. His Forma Urbis Romae, a large map published in sections between 1893 and 1901, captures all that was then known of the existence of the built world in the city. His multi-volumed Storia degli Scavi (1902-1913) is a formidable reference work, filled with notices of archaeological finds made in Rome from c. 1000 to 1870. Beginning in c. 1871, Lanciani provided innumerable articles and notes for two primary journals published by the Italian state and Rome' s municipal government, respectively, Notizie degli Scavi and Bulletino della Commissione archeologica comunale di Roma, on artifacts or buildings being freshly unearthed in Rome. In addition, he wrote English-language books and articles, using the recent discoveries to educate an Anglo-American audience about ancient Roman culture.

Although his life has been fully examined by Domenico Palombi in 2006, a rigorous examination of Lanciani' s formidable scholarly production has not yet been undertaken. This monograph will do this, positioning some of his fascinations, interpretations, and presentations of ancient Rome within a broad context of historical and cultural events in late 19th- / early 20th-century Rome. It scrutinizes Lanciani' s published work with the following in mind: the subtle transformations in the practice of archaeology in Italy, the extreme destruction of ancient Rome during the construction of the modern capital, the variable oversight of the bureaucratic archaeological services in Rome, and the heated political discourse over the ownership and display of cultural patrimony in the new nation. In addition, it takes into account that Lanciani's publications significantly contributed and responded to the interests of a nexus of international scholars, archaeologists, collectors, and museum professionals, including those from the United States.

Το νέο βιβλίο του Δημήτρη Πλάντζου εντάσσεται στον χώρο της πολιτισμικής κριτικής και στόχος του είναι να διερευνήσει τους τρό-πους με τους οποίους η κλασική αρχαιότητα επιβάλλεται ως βιο-πολιτικό εργαλείο στη σημερινή Ελλάδα· δηλαδή ως μηχανισμός οργάνωσης ομάδων και συλλογικοτήτων γύρω από συγκεκριμένες πολιτικές ή ιδεολογικές ατζέντες, με πρόσχημα ένα καταστατικό αρχαιολατρικό ήθος. Το βιβλίο καλύπτει την τελευταία περίπου δεκαετία – από την τελετή έναρξης του 2004 έως την Αμφίπολη. Ενδιαμέσως αναλύονται άλλες στιγμές του πρόσφατου εθνικού βίου: τελετές και επιτελέσεις μικρότερης εμβέλειας, αλλά και οι αρ-χαιολατρικές χρήσεις του παρελθόντος στα επεισόδια της Κερα-τέας, στις πιο πρόσφατες οργανωμένες αντιδράσεις στη λεγόμενη «μνημονιακή» πολιτική, ή στην πολιτική και κοινωνική δράση του ομοφυλόφιλου κινήματος. Το ιστορικό υπόβαθρο αυτών των εξε-λίξεων καλύπτεται με αναδρομές στην πνευματική παραγωγή 100 και πλέον χρόνων – από τους ποιητές της γενιάς του '30 έως τους σημερινούς επιγόνους τους, με ενδιάμεσους σταθμούς τον λαϊ-κό ελληνικό κινηματογράφο, τη μοντερνιστική αρχιτεκτονική και ζωγραφική, τον Χατζιδάκι, τον Θεοδωράκη, τον Σαββόπουλο, τη Γιουροβίζιον. Αν και δεν πρόκειται για ένα βιβλίο για την κρίση, Το πρόσφατο μέλ-λον επιχειρεί να σκιαγραφήσει την πολιτισμική ιστορία της κρίσης: τους λόγους περί βίας, κοινωνίας των πολιτών, και ευρωπαϊκού κεκτημένου, καθώς και τη διαπλοκή τους στον λόγο περί παρελ-θόντος ως μηχανισμού για τον καθορισμό (όσο και τον έλεγχο) του παρόντος. Textiles comprise a vast and wide category of material culture and constitute a crucial part of the ancient economy. Yet, studies of classical antiquity still often leave out this important category of material culture, partly due to the textiles themselves being only rarely preserved in the archaeological record. This neglect is also prevalent in scholarship on ancient Greek religion and ritual, although it is one of the most vibrant and rapidly developing branches of classical scholarship. The aim of the present enquiry is, therefore, to introduce textiles into the study of ancient Greek religion and thereby illuminate the roles textiles played in the performance of Greek ritual and their wider consequences.

Among the questions posed are how and where we can detect the use of textiles in the sanctuaries, and how they were used in rituals including their impact on the performance of these rituals and the people involved. Chapters centre on three themes: first, the dedication of textiles and clothing accessories in Greek sanctuaries is investigated through a thorough examination of the temple inventories. Second, the use of textiles to dress ancient cult images is explored. The examination of Hellenistic and Roman copies of ancient cult images from Asia Minor as well as depictions of cult images in vase-painting in collocation with written sources illustrates the existence of this particular ritual custom in ancient Greece. Third, the existence of dress codes in the Greek sanctuaries is addressed through an investigation of the existence of particular attire for ritual personnel as well as visitors to the sanctuaries with the help of iconography and written sources.

By merging the study of Greek religion and the study of textiles, the current study illustrates how textiles are, indeed, central materialisations of Greek cult, by reason of their capacity to accentuate and epitomize aspects of identity, spirituality, position in the religious system, by their forms as links between the maker, user, wearer, but also as key material agents in the performance of rituals and communication with the divine.
