Iron Age Iberian Peninsula (Archaeology)

This paper proposes an alternative reading for the legend of the lead coins found in the Maderero mine (Almodóvar del Río, Córdoba), for which the normally–accepted reading is okanaka. These coins are supposed to have been issued by the Turdetanian city of Κάνακα (Ptol. geogr. 2,4,12), usually located either in Alcolea del Río (Seville), if it corresponded, based on the resemblance of their names, with Canama (Plin. nat. 3,11)/ Canania (CIL II, 1074, or in Puebla de Guzmán (Huelva), as indicated by Ptolemy, on the frontier between Turdetania and Lusitania. The palaeographic problems presented by the traditional reading have led me to propose the alternative reading sabora which, though not without problems, has a greater palaeo-graphic coherence. This new reading would allow us to speculate that the lead coins were minted in another Turdetanian city, Sabora, the stipendiary city of the conventus Astigitanus (Plin. nat. 3,12), traditionally located on the Cerro de Sabora (Cañete la Real, Málaga), although some studies place it in Castillejos de Teba (Teba, Málaga). However, the latest news of the findings of these leads point back to the Almodóvar del Río area, the old Carbula, so probably it is a different city with the same name.

En este trabajo se propone una lectura alternativa para la leyenda de los plomos monetiformes hallados en la mina del Maderero (Almodovar del Río, Córdoba) para los que se acepta normalmente la lectura okanaka, que se supone que habrían sido emitidos por la ciudad turdetana de Κάνακα (Ptol. 2, 4, 12), localizada habitualmente bien en Alcolea del Río (Sevilla), si se correspondiera con Canama (Plin. 3, 11) / Canania (CIL II, 1074), o bien en Puebla de Guzmán (Huelva). Los problemas paleográficos que presenta la lectura tradicional me han llevado a proponer la lectura alternativa sabora, que aún sin estar libre de problemas, presenta una mayor coherencia paleográfica. La nueva lectura permitiría proponer que la responsable de la emisión de los plomos fuese otra ciudad turdetana, la Sabora estipendiaria del conventus astigitanus (Plin. 3, 12), localizada tradicionalmente en el Cerro de Sabora (Cañete la Real, Málaga), aunque los últimos estudios la sitúan en Castillejos de Teba (Teba, Málaga). No obstante, las últimas noticias de hallazgos de estos plomos vuelven a apuntar a la zona de Almodóvar del Río, la antigua Carbula, por lo que probablemente se trate de una ciudad diferente con el mismo nombre.

En aquest treball es proposa una lectura alternativa per a la llegenda dels ploms monetiformes trobats a la mina del Maderero (Almodovar del Río, Còrdova) pels quals s'accepta normalment la lectura okanaka, que se suposa haurien estat emesos per la ciutat turdetana de Κάνακα (Ptol. 2, 4, 12), localitzada habitualment bé a Alcolea del Río (Sevilla), si es correspongués amb Canama (Plin. 3, 11) / Canania (CIL II, 1074), o bé amb Puebla de Guzmán (Huelva).  Els problemes paleogràfics que presenta la lectura tradicional m'han portat a proposar la lectura alternativa Sabora, que tot i no estar lliure de problemes, presenta una major coherència paleogràfica. La nova lectura permetria proposar que la responsable de l'emissió dels ploms fos una altra ciutat turdetana, la Sabora estipendiària del conventus Astigitanus (Plin. 3, 12), localitzada tradicionalment al Cerro de Sabora (Cañete la Real, Màlaga), tot i que els darrers estudis la situen als Castillejos de Teba (Teba, Málaga). Tot i així, les darreres notícies de troballes d'aquests ploms tornen a apuntar a l'entorn d'Almodóvar del Río, la antiga Carbula, cosa que fa pensar que probablement es tracti d'una ciutat diferent amb el mateix nom.

In recent years, various large buildings have been discovered in Ullastret, organised around patios. Zone 14 is one
of these buildings, in which three construction phases have been discovered, going from the second half of the
4th century BC to the end of the 3rd and beginning of the 2nd century BC. Important foundational rituals have been
found, as well as evidence of the accumulation of farming products and prestige goods, and also metalwork
activities. These buildings illustrate the existence of a powerful aristocratic class in Ullastret.

The production and use of amphorae in the Phoenician world was a very important economic sector, both in the Levant and in all the areas colonized by the Phoenicians since the early 1st millennium BC and in the urban communities that developed in these areas on the basis of such colonial roots. Amphorae were an indispensable tool for transporting products such as wine, olive oil or salted fish, which were not only in great demand but also played an essential role in the economies of most of the Phoenician and Punic cities of the West. These amphorae were manufactured both in Carthage and its area of influence and in Gadir and its "Atlantic circle", following certain size, weight and capacity standards, adapting in each case the oriental traditions to the local regulations and needs. In this context, the production (in parallel to the "normal size" containers) of small-sized versions, interpreted in many cases as "miniatures" closer to household plain wares, without an economic value similar to that of their prototypes, was observed long ago. Their frequent finding in cult contexts (as offerings) and especially in funerary areas (necropolises and tofets) suggested this functional connection, and some scholars considered that their manufacture was specifically intended for this function as votives. In recent years, the study of a large group of items in Cadiz (the ancient Gadir) and in the southern coast of the Iberian Peninsula has allowed to refute the idea that in this area they were used in funerary contexts, and in turn has confirmed that the "miniatures" reproduced in detail the profiles of the amphorae of normal size, with capacities that are divisors of the same capacity standard for liquids. The distribution of these small amphorae, which includes findings both on land and underwater in various parts of the region, also supports that they were not only used as votive offerings in the maritime sanctuaries of the Bay of Cadiz, but may also have been used for commercial purposes. The aim of the paper will therefore be to discuss the available archaeological evidence and, in the absence of additional sources (epigraphic, literary, etc.), to place these data from Cadiz in the general context of the production of small amphorae in the Phoenician-Punic world, tracing the possible existence of "commercial samples".

El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo definir los espacios militares republicanos romanos y su caracterización arqueológica. Esto es para comprender la estructura y la evolución del escenario del territorio del noreste peninsular. Este trabajo se enmarca en una cronología que se extiende entre la llegada de los romanos a la Península Ibérica y hasta el período de Augusto, a partir de una realidad arqueológica que hemos reconstruido en el noreste, con 62 yacimientos estudiados. Para ello se ha definido una clasificación funcional que en primer lugar implicó la separación entre espacios militares inherentes y áreas logísticas. El siguiente paso es la visión diacrónica del noreste de la Hispania Citerior desde el segundo al primer siglo a.C., durante tres períodos de estrés bélico y sus períodos intermedios.

The Iron Age societies of the southeastern Iberian Peninsula, like their Greek and Etruscan counterparts, used stone sculptures to decorate their sanctuaries and cemeteries. Limestone was the raw material used. While abundant throughout the region, it was not always of sufficient quality to implement the iconographic projects at hand. This paper describes a study of Jutia monument (fourth to second centuries BCE), an architectural structure supporting a number of zoomorphic sculptures. Located at a distance from any major city of the time, the sculptor’s workshop had to select the best materials in the surrounds. The present study aims to establish the origin of the limestone used and ascertain how decisions were made and collective work invested to build this monument. A geological study of the possible areas of origin is supplemented with the petrological characterisation of the respective outcropped materials and the archaeological elements recovered. Colour parameters, ultrasound pulse velocity (UPV) and limestone hardness and geochemical composition, the latter using a handheld XRF instrument, are also determined. The findings reveal that the figures were sculpted from Upper Miocene calcarenite or sandy limestones quarried at around 3 km from the site. In contrast, other parts of the building were erected with bioclastic limestone from the immediate surrounds, at just 200 m from the monument.

La Meseta de Requena-Utiel constituyó durante época ibérica (ss. VI-I a.C.) el territorio de la antigua ciudad de Kelin (Caudete de las Fuentes). En este trabajo analizamos la última fase, el periodo Ibérico Final (ss. II-I a.C.), que coincide con las dos primeras centurias de presencia romana en ámbito peninsular y el derivado contacto cultural entre iberos y romanos. Tenemos sólida información para defender que en estas tierras el siglo II a.C. supuso una fase de continuidad y, hasta cierto punto, auge, produciéndose los cambios más profundos a partir del siglo I a.C.

We assembled genome-wide data from 271 ancient Iberians, of whom 176 are from the largely unsampled period after 2000 BCE, thereby providing a high-resolution time transect of the Iberian Peninsula. We document high genetic substructure between northwestern and southeastern hunter-gatherers before the spread of farming. We reveal sporadic contacts between Iberia and North Africa by ~2500 BCE and, by ~2000 BCE, the replacement of 40% of Iberia’s ancestry and nearly 100% of its Y-chromosomes by people with Steppe ancestry. We show that, in the Iron Age, Steppe ancestry had spread not only into Indo-European–speaking regions but also into non-Indo-European–speaking ones, and we reveal that present-day Basques are best described as a typical Iron Age population without the admixture events that later affected the rest of Iberia. Genomics of the Iberian Peninsula Ancient DNA studies have begun to help us understand the genetic history and movements of people across the globe. Focusing on the Iberian Peninsula, Olalde et al. report genome-wide data from 271 ancient individuals from Iberia (see the Perspective by Vander Linden). The findings provide a comprehensive genetic time transect of the region. Linguistics analysis and genetic analysis of archaeological human remains dating from about 7000 years ago to the present elucidate the genetic impact of prehistoric and historic migrations from Europe and North Africa. RESUMEN Se estudian los materiales aportados por un castro del interior de Galicia, datado entre los siglo II-I a.C. En la colección no se documentan materiales romanos. Se hace una valoración crítica sobre los datos ar-queométricos del yacimiento. ABSTRACT We study the materials provided by a hillfort inside Galicia, dated between the second century BC. The paper focuses on seven unpublished ceramic incense-burners found off the coastal area of La Caleta, close to the northwestern part of the present-day city of Cadiz. The items were granted to the Museo Historico Municipal of San Fernando more than two decades ago. Their study makes possible to update the discussion about the chronology and function of these censers, recovered in significant quantity from the underwater sites close to La Caleta beach. Additionally, some reflections on the previous historiography are provided, focusing on the fact that most of the ceramic perfume-burners lack of a defined archaeological context due to its clandestine discovery over the second half of the 20th century before the first scientific campaigns started in the area.

Age in Spain and the archaeological site of “Tos Pelat” located in Moncada (Valencia, Spain) is a singular case. We aim with this work to carry out an identification of pigments from these Iberian wall paintings (beginning of the 4th century B. C.) that conserves remains of red, and blue colors.
Small wall fragments with pigment decoration and red lumps found in ceramic vessels were analyzed by non destructive Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence spectrometry
(EDXRF) in order to characterize the inorganic elements of the pigments. Additionally, small size samples scraped off from the paint surface were analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy with coupled X-ray microanalysis (SEM-EDS), Optical Microscopy (OM) and X-Ray powder diffraction (XRD) to identify the crystalline phases. The results of the analysis have led to the identification of the blue pigment as Egyptian blue and the red pigments as hematite and vermilion, all of them applied over a preparation layer of calcium carbonate and quartz. These analyses are very important to compare the materials used in domestic wall painting with the pigments used in sculptures, temples or tombs.

La nécropole du second âge du fer d'Ensérune compte plus de 500 tombes, datées entre le milieu du Ve s. et la fin du IIIe s. av. J.-C. et demeure à ce jour le groupe de sépultures le plus important de Méditerranée nord-occidentale pour cette période chronologique. Au terme de cette étude il apparait que, compte tenu de l'ancienneté de la majorité des découvertes, seuls deux tiers environ des tombes sont réellement utilisables afin d'analyser les caractéristiques et le développement de cette nécropole, mais aussi dans la perspective de confronter les pratiques funéraires ici mises en oeuvre avec celles de Gaule méridionale et des régions limitrophes. Comme dans l'ensemble du monde indigène du Languedoc occidental, depuis le Bronze final, le traitement du corps est toujours l'incinération et toutes les classes d'âge sont concernées, à l'exception des périnatals et des très jeunes enfants. Une évolution des modes de sépulture et de la composition des dépôts est cependant bien perceptible. Jusque dans le premier quart du IVe s., on rencontre des tombes dépourvues de vase cinéraire, qui coexistent à partir de ce moment avec d'autres, quant à elles munies d'un ossuaire qui, dans la majorité des cas, consiste en une urne ou une cruche à pâte claire. Une modification significative des dépôts est observée à partir du dernier quart du IVe s., en ce sens que l'ossuaire est désormais rarement le seul vase présent dans la tombe. Le mort est pourvu de ses objets personnels, brûlés avec lui. Durant cette phase de plus d'un siècle, deux faits émergent, à savoir la place de l'armement et l'abondance des dépôts de faune. Durant toute la période d'utilisation de la nécropole, les objets témoignent de contextes différents. Ensérune est un creuset pour cette approche centrée autour du contact de cultures, dans ce monde indigène ouvert essentiellement sur trois horizons, les mondes ibère, grec et laténien. Au second âge du Fer il semble en effet que ces influences exogènes soient moins superficielles qu'auparavant, sans toutefois bouleverser l'enracinement indigène, comme en témoigne la continuité des pratiques funé-raires. Dans ce mélange de cultures matérielles, favorisé sans doute à Ensérune par le cas particulier de sa situation géographique, ce groupe ibéro-languedocien entre Hérault et Pyrénées présente un mélange d'éléments méditerranéens et d'éléments continentaux, somme toute assez minoritaires, sauf dans le domaine de l'armement et de la parure où les schémas laténiens dominent. La découverte de nécropoles importantes, abordées avec les exigences de l'archéologie funéraire désormais bien en place, permettrait sans aucun doute d'avancer de manière plus incisive sur la finesse de ces changements ou les détails de tel ou tel aspect de ces pratiques liées à la mort et à la composition des objets mis en scène. Ensérune conserve néanmoins une image de nécropole excep-tionnelle, tant par la masse et la qualité documentaire des mobiliers et des assemblages que par le rôle que cette fouille a joué dans l'émergence et le développement de la discipline archéologique depuis le début du XXe s.

En este texto se analiza el proceso de apropiación simbólica por el cual la Dama de Elche (s. IV a. C.) se ha convertido en referente de la identidad regional valenciana. Para ello se revisarán los contextos sociopolíticos y culturales que, desde el momento del hallazgo en 1897 hasta la actualidad, han resultado fundamentales para afianzar la centralidad del busto ibérico en el imaginario colectivo valenciano.

This paper examines the process of symbolic appropriation by which the so-called Lady of Elche (stone bust, 4th century BC) has become one of the main symbols of Valencian regional identity. With this aim, socio-political and cultural contexts from 1897 –when the Lady of Elche was discovered-to the present-day will be taken into consideration in order to understand the role of the bust in the Valencian social imaginary.

La historia de las sociedades de la Hispania prerromana está llena de episodios bélicos, atestiguados por guerras, murallas y mercenarios que se sirvieron de un variado catálogo de armas. Estas armas evolucionaron a lo largo del tiempo y, especialmente, gracias a la interacción y aprendizaje de las sociedades hispanas con otros guerreros y artesanos. El estudio del armamento prerromano peninsular se ha renovado y dinamizado en los útlimos tiempos incorporando conceptos complejos interesados en completar la lectura tipológica con la comprensión social y la identificación de los sistemas de interacción cultural que definieron sus formas y usos. Las armas, hoy más que nunca a pese a su heterogeneidad cronológica y cultural, se revelan como elementos renovadores para la investigación de una parte de la Hispania prerromana. La necesidad de poner en común el estado de conocimiento de las armas y los distintos enfoques y perspectivas de trabajo motivaron el encuentro del 17 de enero de 2014 en el Instituto Arqueológico Alemán de Madrid y aquí se presentan las ocho intervenciones que se presentaron junto a otros dos trabajos invitados para ofrecer una panorámica completa tanto técnica como tipológica e histórica.

Die umfangreichen archäologischen Datenbanken, die heutzutage zur Verfügung stehen, ermöglichen einen neuen Blick auf die vorrömischen Waffen der Iberischen Halbinsel.
Hier wird eine komplette Synthese vorgelegt, die sich nicht nur auf technologische und formale Fragen erstreckt, sondern auch auf soziale, kulturelle, ökonomische und sogar politische Wechselbeziehungen. Die jüngsten und weitreichenden Ergebnisse erlauben es, die technischen Neuerungen zu untersuchen und die Chronologien genauer anzupassen. Insbesondere aber lassen sich mediterrane Einflüsse auf die Produktion der iberischen Waffen identifizieren sowie der Einfluss einer iberischen Waffenart auf die Herstellung fremder Waffen, konkret der römischen.

A previous use of the cave is represented by Chalcolithic multiple burials, with objects such as fragments of plaster vessels.

Principalmente se estudia la fase ibérica (s. IV a.C.) de una de las cuevas de la Sierra de los Hermanillos, que se identifica como una cueva-santuario, lo que resulta novedoso en Murcia, aunque estas cuevas son bien conocidas en las zonas limítrofes de Alicante y Valencia.

Un uso previo de la cueva corresponde a enterramientos múltiples del Calcolítico, con objetos como fragmentos de vasos de yeso.
