International conference. Trieste, Novembre, 13-15 2014
This conference aims at analyzing the history of Italy’s nuclear energy policies during the Cold War, by placing the Italian case in a comparative perspective and highlighting the importance of the international context in shaping the country’s specific experience. It builds upon a previous conference, organized by Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A and the University of Trieste in 2012 (Nuclear Energy in Italy after the Second World War: Research, Culture, Politics - http://www.elettra.trieste.it/Ippolito/). This conference proposes to examine the ways in which international politics and economics, technological and scientific exchanges, as well as social and cultural movements, influenced Italian nuclear energy policies, both civilian and military. Furthermore, it seeks to understand how the Italian case compares to other national histories, in Western and Eastern Europe, the U.S., Latin America, Asia and Africa.
With few important exceptions, the Italian case has largely remained on the margins of a growing scholarship on the history of nuclear energy. This conference intends to provide a venue for work-in- progress by junior and senior scholars, with the aim of consolidating a national and international research group on this topic. We are particularly interested in fostering an interdisciplinary dialogue and encourage papers that use a variety of approaches, such as history, science and technology studies, physics, engineering, political science, economics, international relations, anthropology, and geography.
Some of the issues that the conference will address are:
1. The ways in which the Cold War shaped Italian civilian and military nuclear policies.
2. The role public opinion, social and cultural groups, anti-nuclear and pro-nuclear movements, had in shaping Italian nuclear policies.
3. The ways in which an interdisciplinary approach such as that of Science and Technology Studies (STS) might provide a new understanding about the history of nuclear energy in Italy.

This conference is organized by Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A., the Department of Humanities of the University of Trieste, the Department of Political Sciences of the University of Roma Tre, and the Department of Documentary, Linguistic-Philological and Geographic Sciences of the University of Rome “La Sapienza”.
The working group responsible for the conference programme includes professors and researchers from the University of Trieste – Humanities Department; University of Roma Tre – Political Science Department; Machiavelli Center for Cold War Studies – CIMA; University of Rome “La Spaienza” - Physics Department and Departments for Documentary, Linguistic-Philological and Geographical Sciences; Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A.

This article provides an example of historical analysis of a pop song, by showing how Domenico Modugno's super-hit of 1958, "Nel blu, dipinto di blu" (a.k.a. "Volare") powerfully, if implicitly, reflected Italian social renaissance and the beginning of its so-called "economic miracle". The song triumphed at the Sanremo's Festival, then a widely popular event.

In Europa c’è una zona in cui la memoria di un personaggio medievale ha modificato il repertorio di parole, il lessico. Per esempio, ecco spuntare la compagnia aerea Federico II Airways e la Banca Federiciana. Non solo: una grande centrale termoelettrica si chiama “Federico II”, una società privata di vigilanza ha il marchio SveviaPol, una tv privata è TeleSveva. Tutti nomi ispirati dal tedesco-normanno Federico II di Svevia (Jesi, 1194 – Fiorentino, 1250): re e imperatore, figlio di Enrico VI e nipote di Federico I Barbarossa (tutti ai vertici del Sacro Romano Impero); sua mamma era Costanza d’Altavilla, ultima sovrana normanna del Regno di Sicilia.
Dove si verifica questo eclettico entusiasmo? Si potrebbe rispondere: “Ovvio! In Svevia”. Gli indizi in apparenza portano in quella regione storica della Germania, che tra 1079 e 1268 è stata legata alla casata di Federico, gli Staufen (o Hohenstaufen). Invece, no. I super fan dell'imperatore sono in Puglia.

From the valley of Adige, the massif of Monte Baldo is first rising with steep walls, and only above them the characteristic eastern terrace of Monte Baldo stretches.

In those walls, on the altitude of 773 m, already from the year 1000 on, and certainly in the 12th century, there was a hermitage and in 1530 the first church was built there. In 1898 it was rebuilt, but the biggest reconstruction started in 1975.
The church was demolished and rebuilt to the dimensions, which can be seen nowadays. The church was consecrated in 1978 and in 1988 also the Pope visited the place.

Once the place was hardly reachable. Only a narrow and exposed passage was leading to the buildings.

The Sanctuarium and the Shrine of the Corona is a place of silence and meditation, extended between heaven and earth, hidden in the heart of the Baldo rocks. Medieval documents testify that hermits linked to the Abbey of St Zeno in Verona lived in the Baldo area already around the year 1000 and that at least from the second half of the 13th century there was a monastery with a chapel dedicated to St Mary of Montebaldo. This was only accessible by a dangerous narrow path in the rock. A holy tradition dates the birth of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Corona to 1522, the year when the sculpture venerated hen was miraculously transported through angelic intervention from the island of Rhodes, when the island was invaded by the Muslim army of Suliman II. This date is however contested by the existence, in the recesses of the modern shrine, of a fourteenth century painting of the Our Lady and the Child Jesus. This was the first image venerated in the original chapel, which took its name from it. Between 1434 and 1437 St Mary of Montebaldo passed under the ownership of the Knights of St John, or of the Holy Sepulchre, present in Verona since 1362 as the Commenda di San Vitale e Sepolcro, who remained owners of the Shrine until the dissolving under the Napoleonic provision of 1806. It would seem that the group in stone of the Pietà later venerated as Our Lady of the Corona dates to this period. The statue, that is 70 centimetres high, 56 wide and 25 in depth, is made from local stone and painted. It stands on a pedestal that bears the legend “HOC OPUS FECIT FIERI LODOVICUS D CASTROBARCO D 1432”, traditionally considered proof that the statue was made and given to the Corona in 1432 by Lodovico Castelbarco, of a noble family of Rovereto. During its four centuries of operation, the Commenda radically transformed Our Lady of the Corona, turning it into a real spacious and accessible Shrine thanks to the building of a wooden access bridge in the valley (1458) and the construction of a new church measuring 18 metres by 7 over the old chapel (1490-1521).
The sixteenth century saw the creation of two sets of access steps that can still be seen: a wider one, composed of 556 steps which from the spring of Spiazzi, later called “Spring of Independence” went down to the Bridge “del Tiglio”, and a narrower one, 234 steps, cut from the rock along the original very narrow path that went from the bridge to the church.

This article studies post-war Italy’s forgetful attitude towards its Fascist past by interpreting a political measure, the Togliatti amnesty (1946), and 1950s film censorship as ‘institutionalised forms of (…) amnesia’ (Ricoeur 2004, 452). The amnesty, which erased the Fascists’ legal responsibility for war and political crimes, represented the first act of oblivion of the Republican political establishment, embodying a forgetful mindset that influenced Italian culture through institutional instruments like film censorship. In 1950s Italy, censorship acted as a further form of institutionalised amnesia aimed at erasing from films the traces of the compromising continuity between the Fascist past and the democratic present. The story of the making and unmaking of the Italian episode of I vinti by Michelangelo Antonioni is a meaningful example of this dynamic. Producers and government commissioners censored the plot and changed it from a story about a neo-fascist militant to one about a young bourgeois who smuggles cigarettes. However, Antonioni resisted the institutional imposition to forget by choosing locations where the material dimension of the landscape still embodied the Fascist legacy of the country.

ENG: This article aims to reconstruct the history of the Piazza Fontana massacre, from the events of December 12, 1969, until the last lawsuit on the facts (Milan, 2005). This historical reconstruction, will use different types of sources: the counter-investigations of journalists and groups of the extra-parliamentary, the investigations of the police, magistrates and finally the judicial documents issued, in the light of the information and assessments made. ITA: Questo Articolo ha come scopo quello di ricostruire la storia della Strage di Piazza Fontana, dagli eventi del 12 dicembre 1969, sino all’ultimo processo sui fatti, tenutosi a Milano nel 2005. Tale ricostruzione storica, utilizzerà differenti tipologie di fonti: da una parte, le controinchieste di giornalisti e di gruppi della sinistra extraparlamentare, dall’altra le indagini delle forze dell’ordine, dei magistrati e infine gli atti giudiziari emessi, alla luce delle informazioni e dagli accertamenti svolti.

The aim of this ongoing research project is to resolve the question of attribution of a series of barbarian imitation tremisses identified by the mark •T• (typically appearing on the reverse inscription). This series has traditionally been attributed to the Merovingian king Thierry Ier of Metz, son of Clovis, although this claim has not been fully substantiated and a review of previous scholarship is needed.

In light of new numismatic and archaeological evidence, there is another likely contender for the mark: Theoderic the Great, king of Ostrogothic Italy from 493AD, and king of the Visigoths from 511AD, until his death in 526AD.

This revised attribution contributes to addressing broader questions of authority and minting practices in the barbarian West, and understanding the relationship with the Byzantine Empire as pars imperii.

And, with the coins themselves being Narbonne-issued Visigothic coins with the mint-mark of Theoderic the Great, it goes some way to understanding minting policy during his reign of 511-526AD: do the coins serve a dual purpose of reinforcing Imperial authority and Theoderic’s constitutional position in the West?

"Alla domanda «perché il Sud è rimasto indietro?» sono state date risposte diverse, fra le più lontane l’una dall’altra. Una letteratura di lunga data pone l’accento sulle differenze fra i meridionali e il resto degli italiani, di tipo culturale o etico, quando non addirittura genetico: i meridionali finiscono sul banco degli imputati, senza grosse distinzioni fra loro. Un altro genere di risposte biasima la geografia avversa, oppure denuncia lo sfruttamento ad opera degli italiani del Nord: qui i meridionali vengono assolti, ma di nuovo senza distinzioni, al punto che perfino i misfatti di certe classi dirigenti appaiono ridimensionati.
Il libro ricostruisce i divari regionali sotto diversi aspetti (reddito, istruzione, sviluppo umano e civile) al momento dell’Unità, demolendo il mito che vorrebbe un Mezzogiorno allora paragonabile al Centro-Nord, e poi la loro evoluzione fino ai nostri giorni. Il cuore della trattazione sta in una terza risposta: la «miseria degli uomini», cioè la più alta disuguaglianza dei redditi e delle ricchezze, hanno fatto sì che al Sud prevalessero istituzioni estrattive, anziché inclusive come nel Centro-Nord. È stato questo il fattore che maggiormente ha frenato lo sviluppo del Mezzogiorno. La responsabilità ricade sulle classi dirigenti che quelle istituzioni hanno sorretto e incarnato; su quanti nel tempo si sono accaparrati benefici e risorse, avendo interesse a mantenere l’economia e la società involute in una «modernizzazione passiva».

Frutto di un accurato lavoro di ricerca negli archivi e nella stampa locali, il volume mira a ricostruire la storia dei bombardamenti aerei nel territorio senese attraverso un'ampia serie di documenti e testimonianze inedite, ponendo in evidenza le politiche di difesa messe in atto dalle autorità civili e militari, gli effetti delle incursioni aeree sui centri abitati della provincia, sino alle reazioni da parte della popolazione.

Le regard que Machiavel porte sur la réalité lui permet de voir des choses que ses contemporains ne voient pas, comme la nature des comportements collectifs, le caractère mental des liens politiques et religieux ou l'importance de l'opinion dans le gouvernement des États. Le fil conducteur de cette « biographie cognitive » est l’enquête de Machiavel : sa manière d’identifier et construire dans le temps des objets de recherche. Née du constat que Machiavel constitue un cas historique paradoxalement encore peu exploré, cette étude pose de nouvelles questions au travail du secrétaire florentin ouvrant une série de pistes inédites sur ses sources, son approche du Nouveau Monde, sa façon de concevoir des pratiques intellectuelles telles que la lecture et l'écriture. Ce que l’on propose ici est un changement de perspective : il ne s’agit plus de questionner Machiavel sur son identité politique ou religieuse mais de comprendre comment, en interprétant la réalité, il contribue à l’émergence d’une connaissance spécifiquement consacrée à l’homme en société

Questo libro propone una ricostruzione originale delle vicende italiane dalla Liberazione e dall’avvento della Repubblica a oggi. La sua particolarità deriva dal fatto che gli autori hanno dato spazio non soltanto alle vicende politiche ed economiche, ma anche alle trasformazioni della società e del costume, al fenomeno mafioso, all’impatto dei mass media, agli sviluppi del volontariato sociale, al ruolo della Chiesa. In queste pagine si ritrova così la storia di un popolo che dagli orrori di una guerra totale e da una condizione di diffusa povertà è riuscito a raggiungere inattesi livelli di benessere. Vi si legge pure la storia di un sistema politico perennemente in difficoltà, passato dal regime fascista a una fragile democrazia, attraversando le diverse fasi del centrismo, del centro-sinistra, della ‘solidarietà nazionale’, del ‘pentapartito’ ed entrato infine in una tumultuosa e mai conclusa nuova fase di trasformazione. Inoltre, non dimentichiamolo, in queste pagine si ritrova la storia delle vittime della violenza terroristica, delle mafie e delle tante tragedie ‘naturali’ che hanno segnato quasi settant’anni di vita italiana.

La prima edizione critica di Storie e leggende napoletane viene pubblicata, nell’ambito dell’Edizione nazionale delle opere di Benedetto Croce, a cento anni esatti dalla prima edizione (1919). Storie e leggende napoletane è un libro scritto da Croce nella piena maturità, concepito e in buona parte steso all’entrata in guerra dell’Italia, nell’estate del 1915; ripreso, ampliato, completato nell’ultimo anno del primo conflitto mondiale. Trae però origine dagli interessi di studio e dai testi del giovanissimo Croce. Riesumando nel Novecento i propri scritti giovanili, Croce li sottopose a una totale riscrittura, integrandoli con il divenire del suo pensiero. Questa edizione critica è l’esito di un lavoro di ricerca molto lungo, resosi necessario soprattutto per il riscontro della enorme quantità di citazioni e di riferimenti (molti dei quali anonimi) presenti nel testo crociano. La ricostruzione della fittissima rete di fonti ha costituito, per questo eruditissimo libro (che è però anche, tra quelli di Croce, uno dei più noti e amati dal pubblico), «la parte più delicata e insieme onerosa del lavoro», come prevedevano i criteri stabiliti nel 1991 dal Comitato per l’Edizione nazionale (allora presieduto da Mario Scotti), e rigorosamente adottati nella presente edizione critica. Il primo volume (324 pagine) riproduce il testo della quarta edizione (1948), l’ultima apparsa vivente Croce, che è stato però integrato con alcune «giunte» lasciate dall’Autore (espressione della sua ultima volontà), ed emendato dei numerosi errori materiali, grazie al riscontro diretto delle opere cui Croce faceva riferimento, sulle particolari edizioni da lui consultate. Il secondo, consistente, volume (pp. 325-744) è costituito dall’Apparato: la Nota (pp. 331-366) ricostruisce integralmente la storia compositiva ed editoriale del volume e dei singoli scritti che lo compongono, a partire dalle originarie edizioni ottocentesche, con ampiezza, capillarità di indagini, e ricchezza di dati. I Criteri di edizione (pp. 367-401) illustrano e motivano analiticamente tutte le correzioni e integrazioni che sono state apportate al testo del 1948, rispettando però sempre la modalità di citazione dei testi da parte di Croce, con tutte le modifiche volontarie da lui apportate. Nell’Apparato critico (403-486) sono state contemplate le edizioni di ognuno dei singoli scritti di cui è costituito il volume, dalla princeps all’ultima precedente l’esemplare di collazione. Il corposo Indice dei riferimenti, dei rinvii e delle citazioni (pp. 487-710) riporta tutte le opere citate da Croce, anche quelle cui rinvia con indicazioni cursorie, riferendo il passo da cui è stata prelevata la citazione, integrandola con le omissioni verificatesi nel passaggio da un testo all’altro. Sono stati integralmente rintracciati i manoscritti, le particolari edizioni (spesso molto rare), i documenti utilizzati da Croce. L’Indice delle citazioni e dei riferimenti anonimi (pp. 711-728) riporta le più di duecento citazioni anonime riconosciute, e infine l’Indice dei nomi (pp. 729-740) ricostruisce quello predisposto dallo stesso Croce, con i suoi criteri, le sue scelte, le occorrenze da lui segnalate.

The Magenta legacy: from Filippo de Filippi’s collections for the
“Regio Museo Industriale italiano” in Turin to Enrico Hillyer
Giglioli’s account.

In July and August 1866 the Italian corvette Magenta stationed in Japanese waters: it had been sent there for the signing of the Treaty of Friendship between the Kingdom of Italy and the Empire of Japan. In the meantime, the two members of the scientific mission, naturalists Filippo de Filippi (1814-1867) and Enrico H. Giglioli (1845-1909), were also conducting commercial investigations. As it had happened in the other countries visited by the Magenta, different kind of objects were gathered in Japan to be sent to the Royal Italian Industrial Museum in Turin. Due to many vicissitudes, the collections of the Museum are now probably lost. This essay tries to reconstruct the features of De Filippi’s Japanese collections of the Turin Royal Italian Industrial Museum through contemporary evidences and the official account published by Giglioli.

Although the engineering drawings of Leonardo da Vinci are well known, they are not necessarily well understood. Leonardo used the pages of his notebooks as a method of "visual thinking," to investigate and work out problems in everything from mechanics to hydraulics. Leonardo used this same method to investigate the possibility-or impossibility-of perpetual motion. In many of the folio pages, we find pictures and text dealing with a range of designs for perpetual motion machines powered by weights or water. This paper examines Leonardo's investigations of the belief in perpetual motion, a belief that already had a long history by the time he began his studies. In addition, this paper allows us to recreate a typology of his renderings of different kinds of perpetual motion machines-that is, a classification scheme according to the various mechanical elements that he posited or analyzed, and motive forces employed. Finally, this paper reveals that Leonardo carried out his investigations in a detailed and systematic, if at times episodic, manner over a period of years. It also argues that he used his folio drawings to both depict perpetual motion devices and to articulate the problems and impossibilities that such schemes presented.

This book offers the first comprehensive study of recent, popular Italian television. Building on work in American television studies, audience and reception theory, and masculinity studies, Sympathetic Perpetrators and their Audiences on Italian Television examines how and why viewers are positioned to engage emotionally with—and root for—Italian television antiheroes. Italy’s most popular exported series feature alluring and attractive criminal antiheroes, offer fictionalized accounts of historical events or figures, and highlight the routine violence of daily life in the mafia, the police force, and the political sphere. Renga argues that Italian broadcasters have made an international name for themselves by presenting dark and violent subjects in formats that are visually pleasurable and, for many across the globe, highly addictive. Taken as a whole, this book investigates what recent Italian perpetrator television can teach us about television audiences, and our viewing habits and preferences.

L’essai retrace le destin de la communauté italienne en Tunisie pendant la période de la guerre franco-italienne jusqu’à l’armistice, en suite à la défaite française et la mise en place du régime de Vichy. Avec le déclenchement du conflit, les autorités françaises ont procédé à une série de mesures répressives contre les Italiens, quelle que soit leur soutien à la cause fasciste. Avec ces internements, l’introduction de l’obligation de résidence, congédiements et ainsi de suite, ils ont créé des situations de pauvreté et un fort ressentiment anti-français. Après l’armistice, le désir de vengeance engendré une telle situation de tension que les autorités diplomatiques italiennes ont dû intervenir. Aux Italiens en Tunisie il est vite devenu clair que Vichy n’aurait jamais permis l’annexion de l’Afrique du Nord à l’Italie, et en tous cas, dans quelques jours, le progrès de la guerre allait changer à nouveau les données du jeu.

The article is on the history of the large Italian community in Tunisia from
the French-Italian war until the armistice that resulted from the French defeat
and the introduction of the Vichy-regime. With the outbreak of the conflict,
French authorities carried out a series of repressive measures towards the Italians
whether they supported or not the fascist cause. Internments, mandatory
residence, layoff and so on, caused poverty and strong anti-French feelings.
Following the armistice, the desire for revenge created strong tensions so that
the Italian diplomatic authorities had to intervene. Italians in Tunisia soon understood
that Vichy would not allow the annexation of North Africa to Italy,
and in few days the progress of the war was going to change the assett again.
