This paper presents laboratory results on the measurement system of a magnetic suspension bearing system for a jet engine rotor of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Magnetic suspension technology enables continuous diagnostics of a rotary machine and eliminates of the negative properties of classical bearings. This rotor-bearing system consists of two radial magnetic bearings and one axial (thrust) magnetic bearing. The concept of the bearing system with a magnetically suspended rotor for UAV is presented in this paper. Rotor geometric and inertial characteristics were assumed according to the parameters of a TS-21 jet engine. Preliminary studies of the measurement system of rotor engines were made on a laboratory stand with homopolar active magnetic bearings. The measurement system consisted of strain gauges, accelerometers, and contactless proximity sensors. During the research, strains were registered with the use of a wireless data acquisition (DAQ) system. Measurements were per...
New technologies are being developed to elaborate cutting-edge electrical jet engines to replace classical constructions. These new concepts consider the possibility of using electrical machines both as starters and generators, as well as suspension systems for the turbine shafts of aircraft engines. The paper will present mathematical analysis regarding active magnetic bearing (AMB) implementation for rotor–shaft support. This technology allows the elimination of friction forces between cooperating kinematic pairs (stator and rotor), reduces the adverse effects of classic bearings, and increases operating speed range and an operational susceptibility. The mathematical and numerical analysis of active magnetic suspension systems are presented. Next, a comparison of the theoretical studies using Comsol Multiphysics software and its experimental verification are described. A discussion regarding the mathematical analysis and experimental effects is also provided. The conclusion summar...

The recent advances in electromagnetic technologies have made electric drive-magnetically suspended rotorcraft a feasible and practical approach to heavy vertical lift systems. This paper describes the Electric Drive -Magnetic Bearing Vertical Take Off and Landing (MVTOL) system concept that optimizes lift through multiple, optimum blade rotors driven by multiple engine-alternator systems and suspended with large diameter, permanent magnetic bearings. This embodiment of technologies is outside of conventional vertical lift technology and will enable non-rotorcraft industries to enter the market
Detection of the Earth’s magnetic field anomalies is the basis of many types of studies in the field of earth sciences and archaeology. These surveys require different ways to carry out the measures but they have in common that they can be very tiring or expensive. There are now several lightweight commercially available magnetic sensors that allow light-UAVs to be equipped to perform airborne measurements for a wide range of scenarios. In this work, the realization and functioning of an airborne magnetometer prototype were presented and discussed. Tests and measures for the validation of the experimental setup for some applications were reported. The flight sessions, appropriately programmed for different types of measurements, made it possible to evaluate the performance of this detection methodology, highlighting the advantages and drawbacks or limitations and future developments. From the results obtained it was possible to verify that the measurement system is capable of carryi...

A magnetic bearing system using capacitive sensors for position measurementIn this project, design and analysis of an active magnetic bearing has been carried out. An active magnetic bearing, hereinafter abbreviated and referred to as AMB is an electromagnetic device which is used to suspend the rotor (or shaft) of a motor by making use of magnetic force produced due to coil excitation. This suspension is also called levitation. The main advantage is the elimination of friction because of no contact between the surfaces of bearing and the shaft it is to hold. This solves many problems which are otherwise present in case of mechanical bearings. Magnetic Levitation is a technique that was applied about half a century ago when it was first used by scientists and engineers to make solenoids actuators, magnetic cranes and electrical switches (relays) [1]. Today the latest uses of this technique includes contactless magnetic bearings and wheel-less maglev trains. However the level of sophistication and complexity to achieve robust designs has always been the main challenge for engineers. Section 1 reviews the concept of AMB and then gives some of its industry applications. Section 2 discusses the magnetism and magnetic materials. Section 3 encompass the simulation software used for output analysis of AMB. In Section 4, design exercises of 4 different AMBs are completed and outputs analysed. Section 5 Compares all these designs, section 6 concludes the project and highlights some of its findings and section 7 recommends some future prospects and finally section 8 is an abstract of the overall project. There are 11 appendix, each detailing some information that is considered an annex to this project.

Smart bearings incorporating self-powered sensors and wireless data communications with intelligence in monitoring bearing conditions can help to detect early faults in aero-engine bearings. This paper presents the challenges in design and development of a sensing system with compact and low-power consumption sensors and the procedures for sensor performance evaluation under the requirements of aerospace standard. Industrial standard DO160 testing is necessary for preliminary testing of the smart sensing system prior to being installed in aero-engine, thus a laboratory test procedure has been developed for sensor performance evaluation for the smart aero-engine bearings in this project. As a case study, this paper presents the details and results of the accelerometer evaluation following the requirements in DO160.
