Das Wort ‚Hanse' bezeichnet zunächst einmal nichts anderes als eine Gruppe oder eine Ver-einigung von Leuten, die bestimmte Ziele verfolgen. Manchmal wird auch genauer von der "Deutschen Hanse" gesprochen, d.h. einer Vereinigung von norddeutschen Kaufleuten, um den Handel im Ostseeraum, im Küstenbereich der Nordsee und darüber hinaus in der nord-deutschen Tiefebene zu befördern und vor allem um ihn gegen Piraterie und andere Angriffe zu schützen. Dazu muss man sich in Erinnerung rufen, dass die Staaten im Mittelalter und noch weit darüber hinaus oftmals zu schwach waren, um die Seewege zu schützen, so dass ein gefahrloser Handel kaum möglich war (zu den Risiken von Kaufmannsreisen s. Brenning 1993: 48-53 u. 165-178). Es handelt sich also bei der Hanse um ein rein wirtschaftliches Zweckbündnis, bei dem die Lasten der Gefahrenabwehr auf viele Schultern verteilt werden sollten. Sollte es Probleme geben, wurden diese auf den sog. Hansetagen (s. Kap. 1.2.), in späterer Zeit typischerweise in Lübeck, verhandelt. Half auch dies nichts, konnte ein Kauf-mann, später ganze Städte, die sich unbotmäßig oder grob unsolidarisch verhielten, auch von diesem Zweckbündnis ausgeschlossen werden, was mit erheblichen wirtschaftlichen Nachtei-len verbunden war. Einen solchen Rauswurf nannte man "verhansen". Die Hanse ist natürlich nicht aus dem Nichts entstanden, sondern hat sich die Handels-wege und-strukturen zu eigen gemacht, die es bereits seit langem gab, vor allem den sog. Visby-Handel. Dabei machte man sich (wieder einmal) die strategisch günstig in der Mitte der Ostsee gelegene Insel Gotland als Zwischenstation und Umschlagplatz zunutze (s. die nachfolgenden beiden Karten). Im Laufe der Jahre bildete sich hieraus ein ganz Nordeuropa umspannendes Netzwerk, das wie die folgenden beiden Karten sehr anschaulich zeigen, eine Hauptschlagader von Nov-gorod und Reval im Nordosten über Visby auf Gotland nach Lübeck und dann über Lüneburg bis in weit in den Süden besaß. Wichtige Güter waren der Hering, aber auch Pelze und Leder. Im Gegenzug profitierte der Norden Europas von den Salzvorkommen aus der norddeutschen Tiefebene. Es war also ein profitables Geschäft auf Gegenseitigkeit, da insbesondere das Salz zur Konservierung von Fisch unabdingbar war. In Westskandinavien bildete die Stadt Bergen den Hauptstützpunkt für den gesamten Nordlandhandel.

Carnival versus Thélème: The Question of ‘Freedom’
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The best vantage point for understanding ‘transgressive sacrality’ as a universal phenomenon is the principle of ‘freedom’ (svātantrya), the central concern of Rabelais (1494–1563), Bakhtin (1895–1975), and Abhinavagupta (c. 950–1020).2 The medieval Christian dispensation revolved around the opposition, alternation, and complementarity between the stern, ascetic, otherworldly spiritual ideal of the Church and the periodic extended license of the popular carnival that rejuvenated this world of piety by rendering it topsy-turvy. Through Rabelais—the erudite monk and priest, who embodied the transition to the ‘humanist’ era—the unschooled obscene clamor of the primordial folk and festive marketplace found unvarnished exaggerated expression in early Renaissance literature. No longer capable of appreciating much less endorsing such celebration of the beast in Man, post-Enlightenment critics, severing his essential links with the ‘unofficial’ world of debasing folk humor, had sought to minimize the ‘Rabelaisian’ by reducing its thrust to negative anti-clerical satire or rebuked its capricious author wherever his excesses seemed too gratuitous.3 By rehabilitating carnivalesque laughter as intrinsic, readers, the aspiring new elites, from the surviving oral mass culture (Berrong 52-78).4 Princely Pantagruel himself embodies—especially after meeting the disconcerting Panurge—the values, ideals, temperament and comportment of the Renaissance Man par excellence.
Is ‘aristocratic’ Thélème therefore, pace Bakhtin, a (definitive) repudiation by Rabelais of his own earlier celebration of generalized antinomian license, or rather a (necessary, though guarded) reformulation that permits a better understanding of the presuppositions, parameters, and finality of that elusive ‘liberation’? Juxtaposing the medieval Christian carnival to its still surviving counterpart in the Hindu subcontinent—the traditional excesses of which have not been wholly smothered by the recent cultural passage of its (especially anglophone) elites to Westernizing modernity—may allow us to propose a more dialectical understanding of how such (systemic and not only carnivalesque) transgression could culminate in (inner) spiritual freedom.

A period in history which the Renaissance scholars pejoratively called the «Middle Ages» was marked by the emergence of Europe— the rise and development of the Western civilisation. The centuries from the fourth to the fifteenth proved essential for the moulding of today's Europe, but equally so for Croatia, as they witnessed the adoption of specific cultural values and the concentration of extraordinary creative and intellectual energy. The Middle Ages represent the foundations of the processes that followed, their proper understanding being possible only by tracing them to their medieval roots. It was then that Europe acquired its main features: the unity that was effectuated through the Christianity and culture, the opulence of differences, the schism between the East and West, deep-seated contrasts between the North and South, growth of institutions and diverse government bodies, technological and scientific advances, the value of labour and the rise of productivity, affirmation of the new.
The medieval period, however, is often erroneously described as 'dark', 'spiritually and materially backward', 'barbarian', 'a period of obscurantism and persecution', etc. On the other hand, there exists just as distorted romantic perception of the Middle Age as a period of idealism epitomised by chivalry, 'courtly love', monastic mysticism and asceticism, along with most refined human virtues. Apart from the bipolar view, some historians tend to refer to this thousand-year time span as a period of immobility. The truth lies elsewhere: it was a period of profound changes and reforms. The Middle Ages are characterised by a complexity and diversity of facets and meanings. Moreover, this period is defined through a coexistence of different identities, features and phenomena that together create a medieval world. It is more than an interesting, exotic, if obsolete, world of the past—it is a living legacy. The surviving architectural achievements, artefacts and other material remains of the Middle Ages represent the core of European identity. Equally inherent in our today's life and world is its invisible spiritual legacy

Due to the scarcity of archive sources related to Wodzisław Śląski, archeology plays a unique role in the investigation of the town's origins and subsequent development in the Middle Ages and modem times. The first research of Wodzisław area was carried out in the 19th century (G. Stóckel). When the town was being rebuilt after World War 2, basically no research was carried out, apart from archeological interventions of J. Szydłowski in the 1960's related to accidental findings in the
Franciscan cloister. The situation changed in 1971 upon the formation of Wodzisław Museum, which delegated Mr. Werner Pierzyna to carry out rescue research in the town area. Major scale works were launched in the 2ndpart of the 1990's, since when land development investments have been supervised
by archeologists. However, the nature of these works results from the need to protect the town's heritage and is not focused on solution of specific research problems.
The issue of settlements prior to the chartered foundation remains unexplained. Its alleged relation to the nearby "Grodzisko" should be excluded at this stage of research. So far, the oldest materials from the area of the chartered town were discovered near the Franciscan cloister. The issues related to the architecture of this facility need to be researched, just like the issue of the origins and architectural development of the parish church. Preliminary excavations showed another religious facility: the wooden Holy Cross Church, not existing anymore and originally situated outside the chartered town and accompanied by a cemetery (where most probably an Asian woman is buried in one of the graves). The castle is another item erected together with the town. Based on the research held in the 1970's and
in 1998 one can claim that originally the castle incorporated a wooden tower-like structure situated on a mound, which subsequently evolved into a stone building. In the 18th century the castle was demolished and replaced with the existing palace. Most information about the medieval residential precinct was gathered during the research of the area of today's presbytery and Zamkowa street, which also resulted in a large number of artifacts related to day-to-day existence, and gave much information about consumption and natural environment of medieval Wodzisław (archeological research by R. Abłamowicz, paleobotanical analysis by L. Trząski and dendrochronological analysis by M. Krąpiec). Numerous investments in municipal infrastructure made it possible to discover the remains of medieval and modern-time surfaces of roads and squares together with the accompanying infrastructure, such as sewage pipes, gutters, water ducts, etc.
