Roman Army

We can presume the unit, recorded at Mogontiacum under
Tiberius, was displaced to Moesia no later than early Claudius’s reign, being then
transferred to Thracia some time after the province was established in AD 46. It was
stationed there until Domitian, when it was sent to Galatia et Cappadocia, where
it is recorded definitely from AD 99, yet where it had been present as early as 94
(together with another unit of Moesia Inferior, cohors I Raetorum). It was deployed,
together with other units, in Trajan’s Dacian War, being recorded in the newly formed
province of Dacia in 109–110 (nevertheless, it is not documented as cohors milliaria
by diplomas, but only by brick and tile stamps). It was re-deployed to the East with
the occasion of the Trajan’s Parthian campaign, only to return under Hadrian to the
province of Cappadocia, being definitely recorded there in AD 135 (Arrian). These
successive displacements prove the unit’s remarkable mobility in a period full of
military events such as during the reigns of emperors Domitian and Trajan.
Regardless the unit’s subsequent history, it is important to mention its presence
in Moesia and then in Thracia during the 1st century AD, which decisively settles
the discussion on the dating of the inscription from the Sofia Museum, as well as
the identity of the unit recorded in the inscriptions at Antiochia and Eitha.

Cet article présente les premiers résultats des fouilles réalisées sur le camp romain du Lampourdier. Les vestiges retrouvés (levée défensive, réserve de balles de frondes) se rapportent à un camp temporaire précisément daté de la fin du IIe s. av. J.-C. grâce au monnayage. Ce camp est très probablement en lien avec la bataille d'Arausio.

W naszej prezentacji chcielibyśmy przedstawić techniczne kwestie związane z dokumentacją archeologiczną dwóch stanowisk w południowej Jordanii – Dajaniya i Tuwaneh – na których rozpoczęliśmy badania w listopadzie 2018 roku.
Efektem prac prowadzonych przez nasz zespół prac w sezonie 2018 było na stanowisku Dajaniya było:
    • stworzenie ortofotomozaiki oraz modelu wysokościowego terenu stanowiska;
    • częściowy skaning laserowy architektury fortu;
    • dokumentacja fotograficzna 6 wkopów rabunkowych położonych poza murami fortu;
    • wirtualna wycieczka.
Efektem prac prowadzonych przez nasz zespół prac w sezonie 2018 było na stanowisku Tuwaneh było
    • stworzenie ortofotomozaiki oraz modelu wysokościowego terenu, a także skaning laserowy obszaru karawanseraju wraz z przyległościami;
    • stworzenie ortofotomozaiki oraz modelu wysokościowego pozostałości term (tu także skaning laserowy) oraz prostokątnej struktury na północ od kompleksu karawanseraju;
    • skaning laserowy fragmentów kanału burzowego;
    • dokumentacja fotograficzna wkopów rabunkowych w centralnej części wzgórza południowo-wschodniego.

Ważnym dodatkowym rezultatem prac było na obu stanowiskach wypracowanie metodyki dokumentowania terenu o dużej powierzchni przy braku możliwości użycia UAV. Choć Ultra-Low Altitude Photogrammetry or ULAPh jest czasochłonny, stanowi jedyną alternatywę dla tworzenia modeli wysokościowych terenu oraz ortofotomap w takich warunkach.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT
In our presentation we would like to present technical issues related to the archaeological documentation of two sites in southern Jordan - Dajaniya and Tuwaneh - where we started our research in November 2018.
The results of the work carried out by our team in the 2018 season in Dajaniya were:
    - creation an orthophotomosaic and a digital elevation model of the site;
    - partial laser scanning of the fort's architecture;
    - photographic documentation of 6 robbery trenches located outside the walls of the fort;
    - virtual tour.
The results of the work carried out by our team in the 2018 season in Tuwaneh were:
    - creation of an orthophotomosaic and digital elevation model, as well as laser scanning of the caravanserai area and its surroundings;
    - creation of an orthophotomosaic and digital elevation model of bath remains (including laser scanning) and a rectangular structure north of the caravanserai area;
    - laser scanning of fragments of the storm drain;
    - photographic documentation of robbery trenches in the central part of the southeastern hill.

An important additional result of the work on both sites was the development of a methodology for documenting a large area of land with no possibility of using UAV. Although Ultra-Low Altitude Photogrammetry or ULAPh is time-consuming, it is the only alternative to creating elevation models and orthophotomaps in such conditions.

This volume is intended as a Gedenkschrift to celebrate the work and legacy of Dr Brian Dobson. The papers are provided by members of the Hadrianic Society, which Brian was instrumental in setting up over 40 years ago, and represent a range of Roman scholarship by current and former university professors, museum and post-excavation professionals, field archaeologists and non-professionals. The range of papers is indicative of the range of interests held within the Hadrianic Society and those of Brian himself, but focus on the Roman army and Roman frontiers, particularly Hadrian’s Wall.
