Gaio Mario (157-86 a.C.) fu console sette volte, celebrò il trionfo due volte, vinse altrettante guerre esterne, fu acclamato Salvatore della Patria e Terzo Fondatore di Roma. Riformò la leva militare e l' esercito. Rimasto compromesso politicamente dall' avventurismo politico di un tribuno sedizioso, Lucio Apuleio Saturnino, a cui aveva dato appoggio, si tenne in disparte, meditando la rivincita. Il suo contrasto personale con il console Lucio Cornelio Silla (139-78 a.C.) degenerò in lotta tra fazioni e poi in guerra civile. Ebbe così inizio la lunga e tormentata transizione dalla Repubblica all'Impero.
"Gaio Mario. Alle origini della crisi di Roma" dà conto della statura e dell' importanza storica del personaggio, delle ombre e delle luci del suo carattere volitivo, delle sue azioni a favore e contro Roma. Il volume è nato dalla ritenuta necessità che questa figura divenisse oggetto di narrazione e di seria divulgazione al di là della stretta cerchia degli addetti ai lavori. Compito, non facile, assuntosi ora dal Barca - scrive Lorenzo Braccesi, classicista, già professore universitario a Torino, Venezia e Padova, autore di opere prestigiose, nella sua introduzione al volume - e da lui assolto egregiamente. Notevole senz' altro, in una ricerca ben documentata sulle fonti storiche, la sua capacità di mettere l' accento non solo sul grande protagonista del libro, ma anche sui personaggi di contorno, sui loro ambienti familiari, sui particolari accessori, in una parola sulla dimensione antiquaria che rende piu? vivida e accattivante la narrazione. Per il lettore resa ancora più vivace e seducente dalla soppressione di vocaboli tecnici e dall' attualizzazione di toponimi, idronimi e denominazioni geografiche di qualsiasi genere." (L' Autore) - continua Braccesi - non scrive romanzi, ma ci propone una ricostruzione storica vergata da una penna non scevra da stile narrativo. E aggiunge: "Chi scrive è un addetto ai lavori che anche in queste pagine non si esenta dal dire qualcosa di non detto, e lo fa presente per sottolineare come anche uno studioso 'ex professo' possa da questo libro trarre stimoli alla ricerca.

Gaio Mario si collega a una precedente pubblicazione dello stesso autore - "Sangue chiama sangue. Terrore e atrocità nella Roma di Mario e Silla" (L' ERMA di BRETSCHNEIDER Roma, 2016) - rispetto alla quale costituisce il prequel". I due volumi sono il risultato di un unico progetto di ricerca avviato da Natale Barca nel 2013 alla University of California, Berkeley - Department of Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology, in veste di Visiting Scholar Researcher.

Gaius Marius (157-86 BC) was consul seven times, he celebrated the triumph twice, he won as many foreign wars, he was acclaimed Savior of the Fatherland and Third Founder of Rome. He reformed the military lever and the army. Left politically compromised by the political adventurism of a seditious tribune, Lucius Apuleius Saturninus, to whom he had given support, he stood aside, pondering his redemption. His personal contrast with the consul Lucius Cornelius Sulla (139-78 BC) degenerated into a factional struggle and then into a civil war. Thus began the long and tormented transition from the Republic to the Empire.
"Gaius Marius. At the origins of the crisis in Rome" gives an account of the historical importance of the character, of the shadows and the lights of his disposition, of his actions in favor and against Rome. The volume was born from the considered need for this figure to become the object of narration and serious disclosure beyond the narrow circle of insiders. "Task, not easy, now assumed by Natale Barca - writes Lorenzo Braccesi, classicist, former university professor in Turin, Venice and Padua, author of prestigious works, in his introduction to the book - and he acquitted very well. Noteworthy, in a well-researched research on historical sources, his ability to put the accent not only on the great protagonist of the book, but also on the outline characters, on their family environments, on the particular accessories, in a word on antique dimension that makes narration more vivid and engaging.

The great Aqua Augusta aqueduct served the Naples Bay area with fresh water during the time of the Roman Empire. There are very prominent features of the Aqua Augusta, some that are extraordinary when considering other great aqueducts in the Roman Empire. For example, the deep tunnels allowed access to a spring water source from a separate watershed, which resulted in transbasin diversion of the water supply. Each one of the prominent features was engineered to provide water to the public for various uses. The prominent structures included other shallower tunnels (with two major types of construction), hydraulic chutes, arcades (one to an island), baths (located along a well-travelled road), and storage reservoirs. Also, there is the epigraph discovered at the water source. Important villas that may have influenced the alignment of the aqueduct are also discussed.

This paper focuses on material culture - the graffiti from Pompeii - to discuss some images of the different meanings of gladiators’ presentations. Epigraphic evidence is used in this paper to show how this particular kind of Roman entertainment can help us to rethink social relationships and Roman identity.
