System Integration

One of the emerging control problem in manufacturing systems is the ―information interoperability (I 2 )‖ problem: information is required to be coherent and congruent with the specific use, particularly in interfacing manufacturing processes, at any stage of the product lifecycle management. Lack of comprehension, misunderstandings as well as redundant activities are typically signs of I 2 problems. Standardisation initiatives, in the frame of ISO and IEC (IEC 62264), try to answer these problems by specifying the information related to products, manufacturing resources and processes. These represent the most assessed corpus of knowledge for business to manufacturing (B2M) applications interoperability, available so far for studying and solving the I 2 issues. This paper tries to trace a path for studying the I 2 problems in production-control systems, by a formalisation procedure to build an ontology-based model, based on the IEC 62264 standard.

This study explores how innovations surrounding supply chain communication systems (SCCS) affect channel relationships and market performance. Drawing on the resource-based view of the firm, the study hypothesizes that certain SCCS innovations can be viewed as firm resources that enhance channel capabilities, which in turn affect a firm’s market performance. The empirical research is based on 184 responses from a survey with U.S. supply chain and logistics managers using structural equation modeling as the analytic method. The results suggest that the effect of applied technological SCCS innovations on channel capabilities is mediated by interfirm systems integration. In contrast, administrative SCCS innovations enhance information exchange and coordination activities directly. Furthermore, the influence of applied technological innovations for SCCS is not strong enough to affect either responsiveness of the partnership or firm performance, whereas administrative innovations for SCCS affect both.

The unique and beneficial characteristics of solid oxide fuel cell
(SOFC) technology hold much promise for their eventual
widespread adoption in numerous commercial building
applications. Nevertheless, cost and durability challenges remain
that currently limit SOFC technology penetration in stationary
energy applications. Under the U.S. DOE ARPA-E INTEGRATE
program, the Colorado School of Mines and it partners are
developing a novel hybrid stationary power system comprised of
an intermediate temperature (600°C), metal-supported solid oxide
fuel cell stack integrated with a high efficiency stationary engine
and novel balance-of-plant (BOP) equipment. In collaboration with
Colorado State University, and Kohler Power Systems, the project
aims to demonstrate a system that can generate power (125 kW)
from natural gas at high electric efficiency (>70%-LHV), and low
cost (<1000 $/kW). Project development activities on the hybrid
SOFC/IC engine system development and requirements are
presented and discussed, including modeling and experimental
results from critical balance-of-plant equipment and
technoeconomic outlook.

In this paper, an optimal PID-FLC (Proportional Integral Derivative Fuzzy Logic Controller) is proposed. The design of this system aims to control blood glucose elevation in type 1 diabetic patients. An automated system integrated with a miniaturized insulin infusion pump and a continuous biosensor that measures the glucose level has been developed recently to replace beta cells in the pancreas. The main contribution of the paper is that it introduces an automated insulin delivery system based on a parallel PID-FLC structure tuned with genetic algorithms. This control system was compared to an optimal PIFLC and PD-FLC as well as a reference model. The results revealed that the controllers could maintain the glucose level within a normal range. In addition, the performance of the PIFLC and the PID-FLC was very close to that of beta cells in normal individuals. So, they can be exploited prosperously as control systems to manage blood glucose concentrations in Type 1 diabetic patients. In addition, the PID-FLC saved the amount of the daily delivered insulin, while, its performance was approximately the same as that of the PI-FLC.
