В работата са представени резултатите от проучването на 8 могили от три некропола в района на Централна Странджа (с. Визица и с. Българи). Две от проучените могили в с. Визица  спадат към т.нар. “празни” могили. Те са с височина 6 м и са най-големите в некропола. Останалите четири могили са  с височина до 0,5 м. Периферията на три от тях е оградена с каменен кръг (“крепида”), а при две – от външната страна на кръга е изградено ритуално огнище. Регистриран е и нов архитектурен елемент, своеобразна “лампада” - място, в което са били палени лампи или свещи, изградена от външната страна на кръга.
Погребалният обред във всички могили е трупополагане без фиксирана ориентация относно посоките на света. При могила 2 трупополагането е в цистов гроб, в могила 6 - в гробна яма, а. при могили 4 и 5  -  върху трамбована площадка, направена върху древния терен. Гробните дарове са представени от накити, керамични и стъклени съдове и монети, като повечето от съдове са предназначени за разливане на течности. Това, вероятно, се дължи на ритуала да се поднасят на мъртвите течни храни – практика, характерна за тракийското население и през първото хилядолетие пр. Х. Наблюдава се една интересна закономерност - някои от лампите са поставяни като тапи в устията на по-големи съдове (кани). Част от съдовете са изработени в големи работилници с много добра технология, а другите са местно производство. Типовете на накитите и формите на керамичните съдове са характерни за епохата. На база на керамичния и нумизматичен материал изграждането на този некропол хронологически се отнася към втората и третата четвърт на ІV в. Некрополът вероятно е принадлежал на  жителите на рударско селище, намиращо се на около 200 м в южна посока от него.
Край с. Българи са проучени 2 могили. В едната е погребано дете на възраст 2-3 години. Погребението е извършено върху античния терен. По периферията на могилата е изграден кръг във височина от три реда ломени камъни. На база на открития материал могилата се датира във втората половина на ІІІ в. Погребението  във втората могила е извършено в гробна яма, разположена в центъра на могилата. Като дар, от външната страна на гроба, са поставени кана и паница. Периферията на могилата е оградена с кръг от ломени камъни, отворен от юг. На база на находките гробът се датира от втората половина на ІV в.
Проучените осем могили се вместват в хронологическите рамки от втората половина на ІІІ до третата четвърт на ІV в. Изграждането на могили и ритуални огнища е характерен белег за местното население, което въпреки настъпващата христианизация се е придържало към старите тракийски обичай и практики. Особеност на могилите в Централна Странджа от този период е и почти задължителното присъствие на каменен кръг в периферията им. Този кръг не изпълнява функционалната ролята на крепида, а сакрализира вътрешното “свещено” пространство на могилата. Находките от могилите показват, че населението в тази част на Тракия, в разглеждания период, живее интензивен живот, като поддържа търговски контакти с големите центрове от Черноморското крайбрежие.

The available information on the belief system of Thracians is mainly from Hellenic literature and arts. The Hellenic colonization that took place in ca. 750-550 BC resulted in the Hellenic influence to penetrate deep into inland Thrace. The Thracians associated their indigenous gods and goddesses with the Greek gods and goddesses which they thought had similar characteristics and continued to worship their deities using Greek names. The interpretation of the Thracian pantheon has therefore become more complicated; but the occasionally added local epithets and the recurring features in Hellenic form provide important clues to understand it. This article aims to establish the links of the indigenous Thracian goddesses of Bendis, Kotytto/Kotys, Phosphoros, Aksiokersa, Hepta/Hipta, Perke/Thrake and the mountain goddesses of Rheskynthis/Zerynthia and Ganea, whose names are known from cult studies in Thrace, to the Mother Goddess cult.

Статията е посветена на два предмета от злато от гробница 1/II  от  Могиланската могила във Враца, които са определени от  Иван Венедиков и Нарцис Торбов като златни лъжички.  Разгледаните в статията паралели от  Тракия и Елада позволяват определянето на тези предмети като козметични инструменти-лъжички за изваждане и смесване на козметични средства. The article is dedicated to two golden objects from tomb 1/II in the Mogilanska Mogila tumulus in Vratsa, which are identified by  Ivan Venedikov and Nartsis  Torbov as golden spoons. The paralels from Thrace and Greece, examined in this article allow  the identification of those objects as cosmetic implements-spoons for the extraction and mixing of cosmetic substances.

A lo largo de sus páginas podremos conocer la historia del reino Macedonio, desde sus orígenes míticos hasta la formación de un imperio, de la mano del que, a la postre, se convertiría en el padre del mítico Alejandro Magno y en el forjador de un nuevo ejército que cambiaria el devenir de la guerra en la Antigüedad. Filipo II fue el creador de la falange macedonia, formación que se demostraría como inigualable en el campo de batalla y que reportaría incontables victorias sobre poderosos enemigos, como los ilirios, los tesalios, los tracios, los beocios o los atenienses. Pero no sólo eso, logró integrar en el campo de batalla a la infantería y a la caballería para emplearlos en nuevas formaciones tácticas: armó a sus soldados con las míticas sarissas y apreció como pocos las posibilidades militares que la maquinaria de guerra podía proporcionarle, siendo el mecenas de numerosos avances en este campo. Soñó con conquistar el Imperio persa, cuando ya había logrado lo que nadie antes fue capaz: el control de Grecia.

Sólo la muerte le arrebató esa hazaña, pero sentó las bases de lo que más tarde conseguiría su propio hijo. Su figura levantó tanto odios como pasiones; se le conocía como mujeriego y bebedor, pero también por su habilidad para la oratoria, por sus astucia, determinación y valor. Siempre luchó en primera línea junto a sus soldados y nunca permitió que éstos le llamaran rey, sino solo "General".

This paper extends one published in 2006 where I addressed the question: can we estimate the proportion of coined gold and silver in Hellenistic times out of the total amount of available precious metals? There a rather coherent answer emerged from different approaches to the problem: only a small proportion (not more than 25%) of all the available precious metals was monetized. In this paper, on the other hand, I try to estimate the amount of gold in ancient Greece that was not converted in coins. Such an enquiry clearly entails large uncertainties. My focus is on the weights of extant Greek gold jewellery, the total sum of which I estimate to be c. 70kg (+/- 30kg?). When compared with the total weight of the great treasures of the period (Vergina, Thracian royal tombs, Georgia [Vani]: c. 25kg), this estimate seems reasonable. Other avenues for research are presented (providing still other estimates) for what appears to be a stimulating new perspective on the problem of metal availability and coinage, which will further help us to build a better and narrower framework for our speculations.

Този доклад е продължение (втора част) на лекцията озаглавена “Причерноморието – люлка на европейската цивилизация и Тракия като арийска сърцевина”, изнесена пред Международната научна конференция “Древна Тракия – сакрално и профанно. България, Балканите и Черноморската област”, Пловдив, 2019. Докато в първата част вниманието е фокусирано върху аргументи в полза на тезата за депресията, която днес е леглото на Черно море, като не само подслон за преживяване, но и “люлка” за създаване на генетичен резервоар благоприятстващ развитие на подслонената общност, втората част разглежда доказателствата за твърдението, че тук се развива бъдещата хронологически първа за човечеството цивилизация – тази на Арите (Арийците), които по-късно биват наричани също и Пеласги, Траки, Кимери, Илири и пр. Представени са няколко образци на урбанизирани общности на средна възраст около 7000 години, тоест, предхождащи всички други известни на човечеството. Представени са и оцелели във времето образци на протописменост, разпръснати преимуществено из Арийския континуум на Блаканите, тоест в ареала на Траките. В заключение е публикуван апел към всички – в научните среди, както и в кръговете на местния патриотизъм, за употреба на точна терминология, без ограниченията на политическата коректност и каквито и да е други съображения отвъд обективната реалност, за да се спрат спекулациите с нашето историческо и културно наследство.

Die antike Region Thrakien, die sich über die modernen Länder Bulgarien, Griechenland und den europäischen Teil der Türkei erstreckte, zeichnet sich durch eine abwechslungsreiche Landschaft, eine ereignisvolle Geschichte und eine vielfältige Münzprägung aus (Abb. 1/Karte). Münzen wurden in Thrakien von der Archaik bis zum Ende der mittleren Kaiserzeit (ca. 530 v. Chr.-268 n. Chr.) geprägt. In diesem Gebiet prägten 42 Münzstätten über einen kürzeren oder längeren Zeitraum und in unterschiedlicher Intensität. Dazu kamen Stammes- und Herrscherprägungen.
Seit 2013 werden in Berlin die thrakischen Münzen im Bestand des Münzkabinetts der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin und die Gipsabgüsse in der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie dokumentiert und online veröffentlicht. Hinzu kommen weitere Bestände wie etwa aus Tübingen, Wien, München und aus Privatbesitz. Sie werden in dem eigens entwickelten thrakischen Themenportal www.corpus-nummorum.eu veröffentlicht. Dieses mittlerweile über 6.000 Münzeinträge umfassende Portal steht der internationalen Münzforschung frei zur Verfügung und zielt auf eine kooperative Erschließung der griechischen Münzen der Region Thrakien.

Im Bode-Museum auf der Museumsinsel zeigt das Münzkabinett der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin vom 16. Oktober 2015 bis 15. Oktober 2016  in Kooperation mit der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften die Ausstellung „Thrakien 3.0. Münzprägung im Land des Orpheus“.

The use of curved single-edged swords – μαχαιρα/machaira* (and variants thereof) – developed during the Bronze Age in southeastern Europe, with both the Iapodic and Liburian groups on the eastern Adriatic coast using variants of the machaira during this period (Batović 1983:314; Dreschler-Bižić 1983:383-384). Machaira type swords also appear in the area of the Besarabi culture in the 8 th c. BC (Guštin 1974: 78-79, 81-83; Tomedi 2002:112-113), and the use of this form of weapon can be traced on the Balkans throughout the Iron Age (Gaspari, Mlinar 2005). That the machaira was also adopted by the Balkan Celts has been confirmed by recent archaeological discoveries from sites in the western, central and eastern Balkans (Slovenia, Serbia, Bulgaria), where such weapons have been found in Celtic warrior burials. A good example is that from burial #25 at Most na Soči in Slovenia where a late La Têne cremation burial yielded the burnt remains of a warrior accompanied by a spearhead, a bronze La Têne fibula, and a curved sword of the machaira type. Both the weapons and the fibula from the burial had been ritually 'killed' (i.e. deliberately deformed) in the typical Celtic fashion. The sword from Most na Soči is a machaira of the Ljubljanica type, further examples of which have been found in this region at Šmihel, in Carniola, 2 from the Ljubljana moor, and a Celtic machaira with a decorated hilt discovered in the Ljubljanica river (loc cit).

Посвещавам на паметта на колегата Деница Такева - Германова, чиято всеотдайност в научното поприще събуди интересът ми към египтологията и архаичен Египет като цивилизационна основа на човечеството!!!

В текста е описана една от нишките на търговските взаимотношения на Антична Тракия и Рим с Древен Египет и това е снабдяването със скъпоценни и полускъпоценни камъни за нуждите на аристократичните общества. Като скъпоценен камък с признати изключителни свойства, зеленият берил / смарагд, изумруд/ с химична формула Be3Al2(SiO3)6 е харесван и желан атрибут в ювелирните изделия и в късните векове на източноримските династии / Византия/. За разлика от останалите скъпоценни камъни, чието природно състояние не позволява директната употреба, шестогранната структура на кристала и лесното отделяне на излишните наслагвания дават възможност за прякото използване на призматичните късчета.
Докладът акцентира върху един напълно неизследван в българската научна литература източник на зелен берил за целия Античен Свят и свързаните с него антични бижута в България. Архео - геологическите изследвания от последните години категорично доказват, че рудниците на Wadi Sikait (вж. фиг. 1) в Долен Египет са най - ранните мини познати на човечеството, откъдето зеленият берил е извличан от времето на Аменхотеп Трети / XIV век Пр.Хр. / до VI век или близо 2000 години.

Several tales exist regarding the Sinaia lead tablets. The first known mention of them was when the 200 lead plates were discovered in the warehouse of the Bucharest Museum of Antiquities, Romania, in the 19th century. Of the 200 pieces originally in the collection of plates, only 35 are known to remain today, but there are some photos of some of the rest. When discovered they were ignored and considered to be forgeries because they appeared new, with no traces of corrosion. They were not considered valuable enough to be evacuated with the rest of the Romanian Treasure to Russia in 1916. However, some renewed interest in the plates among non-scholars has been shown more than a century later, following the publication of a report about them by engineer Dan Romalo in 2003. [citation needed] [Wikipedia.org] According to "an oral tradition, " the lead plates are in fact copies made at the Nail Factory of Sinaia in 1875 from the originals, which were allegedly made of gold, and they were kept for a while at the Sinaia Monastery. Allegedly, the gold was used either in the building of Peleş Castle, or the plates were part of the Romanian Treasure which was never returned by Russia after World War I. An analysis made at the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Bucharest confirmed that the composition of the The Sinaia lead plates – Understanding the lead tablets written in the Dacian / Thracian language.

This book presents a study on the results of archaeological investigations of the tumulus called Golyamata Mogila. It was located near the villages of Malomirovo and Zlatinitsa, Elhovo municipality, and was excavated in 2005 by the expedition “Strandzha” headed by the author. The tumulus contained a grave of a Thracian aristocrat of high rank and belonged to the richest burials from the Thracian Age ever found at the territory of Bulgaria. Besides the thorough analysis of the discovered finds and archaeological situations observed in the tumulus, Daniela Agre proposes a number of untraditional hypotheses and interpretations changing some of the commonly accepted views on Thracian art. Although it is written in a rigorous scientific stile, this book will be interesting not only for scientists – archaeologists and thracologists, but for a wide range of readers, which are interested in the history, culture and believes of Thracians.

The article addresses contemporary enthusiasts’ activities dealing with the ancient Thracian heritage in Bulgaria. Alternative re-writings of the past, cult movements and historical re-enactments have been analysed in view of the creation of a popular narrative, which is being endlessly shared, experienced, re-appropriated and re-formulated online. Based on the concept of "community of practice", as it has been recently introduced in Heritage Studies by Nicolas Adell, Regina F. Bendix, Chiara Bortolotto and Markus Tauschek, the focus of the paper is on possible entanglements between various academic and dilettante, professional and amateur, religious and political actors, all of which contribute to the establishment of an “edited” past.

The employment of the tattooing to mark various parts of the human body, is a ‘custom’ that appears throughout the centuries in numerous regions and cultures. Through the existing examples it is pointed out that it was very popular among the ancient Thracians. Either as a sign of nobility for the men of Thrace, or as a mark of punishment on the Thracian women for the death of Orpheus, the Thracian tattoo is testified through the literary sources and the iconography. Focus of this paper is to explore the visual and written information regarding the Thracian ‘custom’ of tattooing and to investigate its symbolism and meanings. In order to do that within the right context, it is provided some brief general information on tattooing and an introduction to the Thracian people and their habits. The Thracian tattoos are approached through the ancient Greek view and they appear to be signs and symbols of various and different status.

Καταλαμβάνοντας το Βορειοανατολικό τμήμα του σύγχρονου ελλαδικού χώρου, οι γεωγραφικές ενότητες της Μακεδονίας και της Θράκης συγκροτούν τον τέταρτο τόμο της σειράς ΑΡΧΑΙΟΛΟΓΙΑ. Αντιστοιχούν σε μεγαλύτερα ή μικρότερα τμήματα των αρχαίων ομώνυμων περιοχών, με μικρό μέρος της Αρχαίας Μακεδονίας και μεγάλο τμήμα της Θράκης να συνεχίζουν σήμερα εκτός της ελληνικής επικράτειας.

Μέσα από αρχαίες και σύγχρονες γεωγραφικές ενότητες, ένα γεωφυσικό περιβάλλον σπάνιας ποικιλότητας, με τους ορεινούς Βαλκανικούς όγκους και ένα πλούσιο υδρολογικό δίκτυο ποταμών και λιμνών να αγγίζουν τις ακτές του Αιγαίου και του Θρακικού πελάγους, ο παρών τόμος ξεδιπλώνει το ταξίδι του ανθρώπου στη Μακεδονία και τη Θράκη από την προϊστορία έως την ύστερη αρχαιότητα, με εργαλεία την αρχαιολογική σκαπάνη και τις γραπτές πηγές.

Το γεωγραφικό όνομα Μακεδονία είναι παράγωγο του εθνικού «Μακεδών» δηλώνοντας τη «χώρα» ή το «κράτος των Μακεδόνων». Το όνομα παραδίδεται στον Ησίοδο, με την ετυμολογικά ασαφή ρίζα του να αναφέρεται είτε στο ύψος των φυλών εκείνων, είτε στο ύψος των βουνών από όπου κατάγονταν. Στις γραπτές πηγές οι «Μακεδνοί» αναφέρονται ρητά ως φύλο ελληνικό και η Μακεδονία ως η αχανής χώρα της επικράτειάς τους, όπου με ρυθμό βραδύ και συνθήκες τελείως διαφορετικές από της νότιας Ελλάδας, η φυλετική κοινωνία υστέρησε αισθητά της πολιτικής. Στα κεφάλαια του τόμου η περιοχή που εξαπλώνεται βόρεια της Θεσσαλίας, ανατολικά της Ηπείρου και δυτικά της Θράκης, εξετάζεται πρώτα ως το πολυδιάστατο φυσικό περιβάλλον που βρέχεται από το Αιγαίο, ορίζεται από την οροσειρά της Πίνδου και τον ποταμό Νέστο και οι πλούσιες κοιλάδες του διαρρέονται από τους μεγαλύτερους ποταμούς της νότιας Βαλκανικής. Οι υδάτινοι αυτοί άξονες (Αλιάκμων, Αξιός, Εχέδωρος-Λουδίας, Στρυμών, Νέστος), όπως και οι εκτεταμένες λίμνες κατά μήκος της βόρειας συνοριακής γραμμής της χώρας (Πρεσπών, Καστοριάς, Βεγορίτιδος, Βόλβης, Κορώνειας) συνέστησαν το ελκυστικό περιβάλλον για τις πρώτες μόνιμες εγκαταστάσεις. Η διάκριση της γης αυτής από τη Θράκη δεν υφίστατο πριν τα ιστορικά χρόνια, πολλώ δε μάλλον που η Θράκη είχε ως φυσικό της όριο τον Ελλήσποντο, τη Θάλασσα του Μαρμαρά και τον Εύξεινο Πόντο στα Ανατολικά. Ίσως σε αυτή την ισχυρά παράκτια διάστασή της οφείλεται η μυθολογική αναγωγή του ονόματος, με τη Θράκη να θεωρείται Ωκεανίδα, κόρη του Ωκεανού και της Παρθενόπης.

Ακολουθώντας τη μεθοδολογία που τηρήθηκε στους προηγούμενους τόμους της σειράς ΑΡΧΑΙΟΛΟΓΙΑ, το κυρίως έργο εξετάζει τη Μακεδονία και τη Θράκη κατά νομό (σήμερα «διοικητικό διαμέρισμα»), ξεκινώντας από την Πίνδο και τον Όλυμπο και καταλήγοντας στον Έβρο. Η κάλυψη μιας τόσο ευρείας γεωγραφικής περιοχής δεν επιτρέπει την αναλυτική παρουσίαση κάθε αρχαιολογικής θέσης και για τον λόγο αυτό προτάχθηκε η συνθετική συνεξέταση των περισσότερων από αυτές στο εισαγωγικό κεφάλαιο κάθε νομού, υπό τον τίτλο «Αρχαιολογικό και Ιστορικό Περίγραμμα». Οι προϊστορικοί οικισμοί και οι αρχαίες πόλεις μείζονος ενδιαφέροντος εξετάζονται σε επιμέρους μικρά κεφάλαια, πλούσια εικονογραφημένα, ενώ η τεκμηρίωση ολοκληρώνεται με την εκτεταμένη βιβλιογραφία στο τέλος του τόμου. 

Τόσο στη γενική επισκόπηση του ιστορικού και αρχαιολογικού περιγράμματος κάθε περιοχής όσο και στα ανεξάρτητα λήμματα, οι θέσεις εντάσσονται στο γεωγραφικό περιβάλλον και στο ιστορικο-κοινωνικό πλαίσιο που τις δημιούργησε, με έμφαση στα πορίσματα των πρόσφατων ερευνών και την ειδική εργογραφία. Χάρτες με τις θέσεις που αναφέρονται στο νομό προτάσσονται κάθε ενότητας, ώστε να διευκολύνουν τον αναγνώστη να παρακολουθήσει τον γεωγραφικό χώρο και την κατανομή των θέσεων σε αυτόν.



The fourth volume of the series “Archaeology” focuses on Macedonia and Thrace, revealing the archaeological physiognomy of northern Greece. The two neighbouring regions, coexisting at various periods, and not always peacefully, share common and different cultural characteristics. Macedonia is lapped by the Aegean Sea, via which it communicated with southern Greece and the islands, while Thrace was over the ages the link between Europe and Asia.
Prehistoric Macedonia was home to organized human habitation even before the Neolithic Age. Cemeteries with Mycenaean finds bear witness to its relations with the southern Greek mainland, and extensive necropolises of tumuli shed light on the so called “Dark Age” (1000-700 BC). Settlements of the Geometric and Archaic periods throughout Macedonia are a valuable source of information on the societies of early historical times, with the wealth of remains increasing notably in the Classical and Hellenistic periods. The palaces of the Macedonian kings, the public buildings, the sanctuaries and the cemeteries attest to the cultural and economic prosperity underpinning the ideology of the new era. The road arteries and the harbours complete the kaleidoscopic image of Macedonia into Roman times.
Thrace bridges the axes between West and East, with its history and culture likewise lost in the depths of prehistory. Numerous archaeological sites – most of them investigated recently – vividly present the region’s course during historical times, when Greek colonists coexisted with the Thracians and their culture. The Macedonian conquest and the completion of the Hellenization process in the fourth century BC, as well as the centuries of the Roman Empire, left behind in Thrace splendid remains of cities, farmsteads and emporia.
